Problems solved by technology

However, the algorithms of these traditional PAP systems have some limitations
For example, although awake subjects also exhibit abnormal patterns of breathing and are more common when anxious, which interferes with the processing of the respiratory signal to calculate the applied pressure

Embodiment Construction

[0028] figure 1 An exemplary embodiment of a system 1 according to the invention is shown. The system 1 may include a mask 20 connected via a conduit 21 to receive a flow of air at a specific pressure from a flow generator 22 . The amount of pressure provided to a particular patient varies according to the particular condition of the patient. This amount of pressure can be determined using any conventional PAP therapy.

[0029] The mask 20 covers the patient's nose and / or mouth. A conventional airflow sensor 23 is coupled to conduit 21. Sensor 23 detects the airflow rate to / from the patient and / or the pressure provided by generator 22 to the patient. The sensor 23 can be internal and external to the generator 22 . Signals corresponding to airflow and / or pressure are provided to processing means 24 for processing. The processing device 24 outputs a signal to a conventional flow control device 25 to control the pressure applied by the flow generator 22 to the fluid condui...

Abstract

The invention relates to a system and method for diagnosis and treatment of a breathing pattern of a patient. Described is a system including a sensor and a processing arrangement. The sensor measures data corresponding to a patient's breathing patterns. The processing arrangement analyzes the breathing patterns to determine whether the breathing patterns are indicative of a REM sleep state. In another embodiment, the processing arrangement analyzes the breathing patterns to determine whether the breathing patterns are indicative of one of the following states: (i) a wake state and (ii) a sleep state. In another embodiment, a neural network analyzes the data to determine whether the breathing patterns are indicative of one of the following states: (i) a REM sleep state, (ii) a wake state and (iii) a sleep state. In another embodiment, the processing arrangement analyzes the data to determine whether the breathing pattern is indicative of an arousal.

Description

[0001] The application date of this application is September 20, 2006, the international application number is PCT / US2006 / 036594, the application number entering the Chinese national phase is 200680035642.9, and the title of the invention is "system and method for diagnosing and treating patients' breathing patterns" "A divisional application of the patent application. technical field [0002] The present invention relates to systems and methods for diagnosing and treating breathing patterns of a patient. Background technique [0003] Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a recognized sleep disorder that may affect approximately 1-5% of the adult population. OSAS is one of the most common causes of excessive daytime sleepiness. OSAS occurs most frequently in obese men and is one of the most common reasons for referrals to sleep disorders clinics. [0004] OSAS is associated with a number of conditions in which patients have anatomical or functional narrowing of the up...
