Embodiment Construction

[0044]Systems and methods for virtually rendering object-based audio through multiple pairs of speakers and improving equalization schemes for such virtual rendering are described, although the application is not so limited. Aspects of one or more embodiments described herein may be implemented in an audio or audio-visual system that performs audio mixing, rendering, and playback of audio or video audio, including one or more computers or processing devices executing software instructions. source audio information in the system for processing. Any of the described embodiments may be used alone, or in any combination with each other. While various embodiments may be motivated by overcoming various deficiencies of the prior art that may be discussed or alluded to in one or more places in this specification, embodiments do not necessarily address any of these deficiencies. In other words, different embodiments may address different deficiencies that may be discussed in this spec...

Abstract

A system for virtually rendering object-based audio by binaurally rendering each object and then translating the resulting stereo binaural signals between multiple crosstalk cancellation circuits feeding corresponding multiple speaker pairs is described. Example. Compared to prior art virtual rendering with a single pair of speakers, the described embodiments improve the listener's impression of space both inside and outside the sweet spot of the crosstalk canceller. An improved equalization technique for the crosstalk canceller is also described, calculated from both the crosstalk canceller filter and the binaural filter and applied to the monophonic audio signal being virtualized. The described technique improves timbre for listeners outside the sweet spot and results in less timbre shift when switching from standard to virtual rendering.
