The present invention provides a method and device for detection of fake plate vehicles. The method for detection of the fake plate vehicles comprises: extracting a first subimage with respect to a vehicle to be inquired in the images to be inquired, the first subimage consisting of license plate numbers which can be identified; identifying the license plate numbers in the first subimage, and determining information of the vehicle type of the vehicle to be detected; obtaining all the example images in the vehicle database with respect to the information of the vehicle type from a pre-established database according to the information of the vehicle type; determining whether the first subimage matches all the example images in the vehicle database or not; and determining the vehicle to be detected is a fake plate vehicle if the first subimage does not match all the example images in the vehicle database. The database comprises a plurality of vehicle type databases. Each vehicle type database comprises a set of a plurality of example images of the vehicle type. The example images of the vehicle type comprise vehicle images in different illumination conditions, vehicle images with different shooting angles and vehicle images at different scenes. The method for detection of fake plate vehicles is able to accurately and easily determine whether a vehicle to be inquired is a fake plate vehicle or not.
