Embodiment Construction

[0014] see first figure 1 , generally designated 10, illustrates the electronic data network of the present invention. As shown, the network 10 includes a system 12 in communication with a user (central processing unit) 14 . At the site with the users 14 there is a server 16 in communication with the users 14 over a connection 18 . Also located at the site of the user 14 is a backup server 20 in communication with the server 16 via a connection 22 . as figure 1 System 12 also communicates with user 14 as indicated by arrows 24 and 26 , and also communicates with backup server 20 . More specifically, in the present invention, in order to store electronic data on the backup server 20, communication between the system 12 and the user 14 is required without reducing the operating capacity of the server 16.

[0015] Operationally, to initiate a routine for electronic data storage, user 14 sends a start command to backup server 20 . figure 1 This command is represented by arrow...

Abstract

Provided is a system and method for storing electronic data that does not depend on a format specific to a storage device. The system receives data to be stored from a back-up server, compresses and encrypts it, and creates a virtual file. An encryption key and 'meta-data', which includes information about the physical attributes of electronic data in the virtual file, are also created by the system. The virtual file, with meta-data, can then be held at a storage device without specifically formatting the virtual file for the device. The encryption key is held separately for subsequent use in file reconstruction.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to systems and methods for storing electronic data. In particular, the present invention relates to systems and methods for storing compressed and encrypted electronic data. The present invention is particularly, but not exclusively, applicable as a system and method for storing compressed / encrypted electronic data on a storage device, regardless of the format required by the storage device. Background of the invention [0002] Today, a variety of devices are used to store electronic data. For example, electronic libraries, magnetic disks, tapes and DVDs are all known options for this purpose. However, each type of storage device requires its data to be formatted according to a protocol unique to the particular storage device. In other words, format protocols for different types of storage devices are not electronically interchangeable. Accordingly, long-term storage of electronic data on storage devices requ...
