Generating a stream of media data containing portions of media files using location tags

A system and method are provided for identifying discrete locations and / or sections within a pre-existing media file without modifying the media file. The discrete locations and / or sections can be associated with one or more user-selected descriptors. The system and method allows for the identifying information to be communicated to consumers of the media file and the media file to be selectively rendered by the consumer using the identifying information, thus allowing a consumer to render only the portion of the media file identified or render from a given discrete location in the media file. In an embodiment, the system and method can be performed without modifying the media file itself and thus no derivative work is created.

Systems and methods for digital media storage and playback

Methods and systems for storage and playback of broadcast media received via a local digital video recording (DVR) system. The system includes the DVR system configured to receive the broadcast media and upload the broadcast media to a storage server over a network. The DVR system divides the broadcast media content into blocks and assigns a unique block ID to each block based on the block data. Prior to uploading each block to the storage server, the unique block ID is sent to the storage server, which only uploads and stored the block if a duplicate block has not already been stored on the storage device, minimizing network demand. A transcoding server coupled to the storage server transcodes the broadcast media content for streaming over the network.

Distributed storage of audio/video content

Provided are systems and techniques for playing audio / video programs (e.g., movies) using a bank of networked audio / video players (e.g., digital projectors). Initially, a first portion (e.g., the majority) of an audio / video program is stored on a first audio / video player in a bank of networked audio / video players and a second portion (e.g., the balance) of the audio / video program is stored on a second audio / video player in the bank of networked audio / video players. An instruction to play the audio / video program (or a composition that includes the audio / video program) is input in the first audio / video player and, in response to that instruction, the second portion of the audio / video program is transferred from the second audio / video player to the first audio video player and the audio / video program is played on the first audio / video player.

Playback apparatus and program content transmitting and receiving system

Program content is easily selected on a playback apparatus having a plurality of program content recording locations.A video recording management server (11) manages program IDs, the video recording condition of program content on a television apparatus (10), and recording location information indicating on which server each program content is recorded, in association with each other as program management information. The television apparatus (10) displays an electronic program guide (100) in which past and future programs are displayed integrally, and displays a video recording complete mark (RM) for programs previously recorded on a user content server (13). On the other hand, when an instruction to play back program content is made in the electronic program guide (100), the television apparatus (10) receives the program content from a server designated from the video recording management server (11) to perform streaming playback. Thus, the television apparatus (100) can perform video recording and playback of program content desired by the user by means of the electronic program guide (100), without making the user specify a program content recording location.

Multiple copy track stage recovery in a data storage system

A bad track in a disk device in a data storage system is recovered by determining which cluster in the system the bad track belongs to. If the track belongs to the cluster that discovered that the track was bad, that cluster recovers the track by locating a good copy of the track, staging the good copy of the track to cache, and destaging the good copy of the track storage unit from the cache to all copies of the track, whether good or bad, in the data storage system. If the track belongs to another cluster, the cluster that discovered that the track was bad sends a message to the other cluster to inform it of the bad track, and the other cluster recovers the bad track. In another aspect, all tracks are owned by one server or server cluster, which performs the staging and destaging.
