Methods and apparatus for selecting a wireless network based on quality of service (QoS) criteria associated with an application

Methods and apparatus for selecting a wireless communication network based on quality of service criteria associated with an application are disclosed. In one illustrative example, one of several different software applications of a mobile communication device is executed. The software application may be, for example, an e-mail application, an Internet data application, a voice-over-IP application, a video player application, an audio player application, or a video game application. Each software application is associated with different quality of service (QoS) criteria for data communications through a wireless network. The quality of service criteria may include, for example, a bandwidth criterion, a delay criterion, a delay variation criterion, and a data loss criterion. A scanning operation is performed to identify a plurality of a wireless networks available in a coverage area of the mobile device. One of the identified wireless networks is selected for communication based on a match between its available quality of service and the quality of service criterion associated with the executed software application. Advantageously, the most suitable network may be chosen and utilized for each software application.

System and Method for Providing Interactive Content with Video Content

A system and method of providing contextual content to an end user viewing a video in a video player in a client is provided. In one embodiment the system and method of provides contextual content via an interactive video skin to an end user viewing a video in a client. These video skin may surround the viewing portal and (1) provide contextual information in the areas outside the video viewing area, (2) embody logic that manipulates the video stream to insert audio, text, graphics, and/or video, (3) interact with third party servers, (4) interact with the user via menus, buttons, and/or graphical widgets, or (5) any combination thereof. In one embodiment, the method may comprise determining contextual data for the end user that comprises one or more of: geographical information of the end user; demographical information of the end user; personal information of the end user, video metadata, and technical data related to the end user's computer or the network to which the computer is connected. Next, the method may include determining advertising content to present to the end user based on the contextual data and presenting the advertising content to the end user concurrently with the video player such as along a periphery of the video player. The advertising content may include a user input mechanism configured to receive information from the end user in which case the method may further include receiving information from the end user via the input mechanism, determining secondary content to present to the user based on the received information, and presenting the secondary content to the end user. The method may also include receiving one or more content elements selected based on the contextual data and supplying the one or more content elements to the video player for integration into the video to thereby customize the video.

Video-on-demand system

A video-on-demand system provides efficient commercial distribution for renting and / or selling movies, video programs, video games and electronic data. Data input stations upload original video data from videotapes, videocassettes, videodisks or film, or from electronic data format on transferable storage media or over a telecommunications line. A video data capture computer converts the original video data into a preferred video data storage format and stores the video data files in a first generation video data storage unit. The video data files are sorted by categories and classified in indexed master files stored on a second generation video data storage unit. NTSC, PAL and / or HDTV versions of the video data files are created and stored in separate data storage units for serving different markets. Customers access the system through computer servers connected to the Internet. The computer servers access the video data file in the data storage units and create a temporary video data file, which is downloaded to the customer via the Internet. The video data file is downloaded at high speed and stored on the customer's video player device for viewing at a later time. The video data files can be downloaded, stored and viewed on a desktop computer, a laptop computer, palmtop computer, a set-top data storage device connected to a television set, video game device, or a personal digital assistant, cellular telephone or pager with video capabilities. The system includes back-up mirror storage files at all levels of the system for security against data loss.
