416 results about "Digital rights" patented technology

Digital rights are those human rights and legal rights that allow individuals to access, use, create, and publish digital media or to access and use computers, other electronic devices, and telecommunications networks. The concept is particularly related to the protection and realization of existing rights, such as the right to privacy and freedom of expression, in the context of digital technologies, especially the Internet. The laws of several countries recognize a right to Internet access.

Method and system for limiting the use of user-specific software features

A server architecture for a digital rights management system that distributes and protects rights in content. The server architecture includes a retail site which sells content items to consumers, a fulfillment site which provides to consumers the content items sold by the retail site, and an activation site which enables consumer reading devices to use content items having an enhanced level of copy protection. Each retail site is equipped with a URL encryption object, which encrypts, according to a secret symmetric key shared between the retail site and the fulfillment site, information that is needed by the fulfillment site to process an order for content sold by the retail site. Upon selling a content item, the retail site transmits to the purchaser a web page having a link to a URL comprising the address of the fulfillment site and a parameter having the encrypted information. Upon following the link, the fulfillment site downloads the ordered content to the consumer, preparing the content if necessary in accordance with the type of security to be carried with the content. The fulfillment site includes an asynchronous fulfillment pipeline which logs information about processed transactions using a store-and-forward messaging service. The fulfillment site may be implemented as several server devices, each having a cache which stores frequently downloaded content items, in which case the asynchronous fulfillment pipeline may also be used to invalidate the cache if a change is made at one server that affects the cached content items. An activation site provides an activation certificate and a secure repository executable to consumer content-rendering devices which enables those content rendering devices to render content having an enhanced level of copy-resistance. The activation site “activates” client-reading devices in a way that binds them to a persona, and limits the number of devices that may be activated for a particular persona, or the rate at which such devices may be activated for a particular persona.

Method and apparatus for automatically detecting sensitive information, applying policies based on a structured taxonomy and dynamically enforcing and reporting on the protection of sensitive data through a software permission wrapper

The present invention relates to the automatic detection of sensitive digital information, and the identification methods, application and enforcement of information security policies for digital information controlled through a software permission wrapper throughout the useful life of the information. This invention includes a unique taxonomy that defines the policies and rules regarding how the information is controlled automatically throughout its useful lifecycle based on the type of information, the stage of the information lifecycle, the user / group role accessing the information, the locality of the information, and the expected threats to the information. The taxonomy is maintained in a database that associates information security control policies and actions to sensitive data. These policies are enforced through a software permission wrapper that is used to encapsulate sensitive digital information. The software permission wrapper is used to control access and enforce digital rights to the information based on the taxonomy based policies for that information. The permission wrapper can automatically change the protection of the information based on pre-defined protection states that can automatically enforce discretionary access control rights to the sensitive information controlled in the permission wrapper. The changes to the level of protection occur dynamically based on changes in user locality, stage of information lifecycle, and user / group role and the detection of threats. In addition, there is provided an internal audit capability describing what actions the user has performed, where the data is located, with whom and how the data has been shared.

Digital rights management for multicasting content distribution

Licensed multimedia content is distributed to users electronically via an internetwork. An archive stores packaged content files wherein each packaged content file includes encrypted multimedia content and protection identification information, and wherein the encrypted multimedia content can be decrypted using a respective key corresponding to the protection identification information. A multicast server is coupled to the archive for providing multicast streams of the packaged content files to the internetwork. A web server provides announcements corresponding to the packaged content files, each announcement including multicast link information. A digital rights server stores each of the respective keys in association with the protection identification information. A user can access one of the announcements from the web server, join a corresponding one of the multicast streams to receive the protection identification information, contact the digital rights server in response to the protection identification information to obtain the respective key from the digital rights server after providing predetermined authorization information to the digital rights server, receive the encrypted multimedia content from the one multicast stream, and decrypt the encrypted multimedia content in response to the respective key.
