Abstract

A system and a method for managing energy efficiency and a control mechanism in a computer network having a plurality of network components are provided. The system includes a network power manager (NPM) coupled to at least one of the plurality of network components. The NPM is configured to receive and analyze power information from at least one of the plurality of the network components. The NPM is further configured to generate configuration instructions based on the analyzing of the power information and send the configuration instructions to at least one of the network components.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention is mainly concerned with managing energy consumption in a network. Background technique [0002] In recent years, energy costs have continued to increase with a gradual upward trend. As a result, industries are becoming increasingly sensitive to these rising costs. IT infrastructure is an area attracting increasing attention. Many companies today use the energy usage of their IT systems as a factor in determining whether energy costs can be reduced. Because of this, an industry has emerged for energy-efficient networking, addressing the rising costs of the overall IT equipment usage (eg, PCs, monitors, printers, servers, network components, etc.). [0003] Modern network components are increasingly implementing energy consumption and efficiency (ECE) control mechanisms. Traditional ECE mechanisms such as power shedding have also begun to be applied to the network. Some modern ECE control mechanisms allow physical layer compon...
