[0039] In order to solve the problem of wasting labels in the prior art, the following embodiments of the present application provide a method for learning a MAC address in a VPLS network and a PE to which the method can be applied. In the following embodiments of this application, a PE allocates only one VSI label to any VSI configured locally, and all PWs under the same VSI, that is, the PWs between this VSI and all its neighbor VSIs share the PW allocated for this VSI. The VSI label, the VSI and its neighbor VSIs belong to the same VPLS instance; then, the PE notifies all the peer PEs where the VSI neighbor VSIs are located about the binding relationship between the VSI and the VSI label allocated for the VSI. The VSI label corresponding to a VSI is used to find out which VSI corresponds to the VSI label when the PE receives an incoming packet carrying the VSI label from the PW, so that it can pair the VSI with the MAC forwarding table of the VSI.
