Embodiment Construction
[0048] refer to figure 1 , an optical transmitter suitable for generating a PDM optical signal is schematically shown. The transmitter 1 comprises a laser source 2 for generating an optical carrier at a selected wavelength suitable for WDM transmission. The beam splitter 3 splits the optical carrier into two carrier components propagating in respective waveguides 4 and 5 . A respective optical modulator 6 and 7 is arranged on each of the waveguides 4 and 5 to impart modulation on a corresponding carrier component according to a respective baseband signal 11 and 12 which is supplied by a baseband signal generator in the form of generated at the same data rate. The light modulators 6 and 7 can be any type of modulator. In a preferred embodiment, the optical modulators 6 and 7 are MZ modulator arrangements adapted to generate PSK modulation, eg binary phase shift keying or quaternary phase shift keying. Such arrangements are known in the art. In particular, the baseband sign...
