Problems solved by technology

Therefore, the quality of the espresso will vary from shot to shot
[0014] Additionally, the amount of crema (crema is the creamy head created on top of the espresso) produced in the espresso cup can affect the barista's estimate of the volume of liquid in the cup
[0015] Another problem is that a weighing scale is required to weigh the resulting espresso drink
This would take up space on the counter top with potential costs to the commercial environment

Embodiment Construction

[0064] refer to figure 1 , which generally shows at 10 an espresso machine incorporating a weighing device 11 according to the invention. The weighing device 11 is positioned in a drip tray 12 of an espresso machine 10 below a group 13 of the espresso machine.

[0065] refer to figure 2 , which shows the drip tray 12 from above. A perforated drain 14 is positioned in the drip tray 12 . A section of the perforated drain 14 has been removed so that the weighing device 11 can be accommodated in the drip tray 12 .

[0066] The weighing device 11 includes a weighing platform 15 positioned within a housing 16 that is accessible through an opening 17 in a top panel 18 of the housing 16 . The top plate 18 rests on the perforated drain 14 up to each side of the section that has been removed. The top surface 19 of the weighing platform 15 of the weighing device 11 is higher than the surface 20 of the top plate 18 (see figure 1 ).

Abstract

A weighing device (11) is incorporated into an espresso coffee machine (10). The weighing device (11) is located in a drip tray (12) of the espresso coffee machine (10) under a group (13) thereof. The weighing device (11) has a display (not shown) for indicating the weight of a shot as it is being delivered and the elapsed time from the start of delivery. A start extraction button (not shown) on a pressure adjusting handle (24) mounted on the group (13) is connected to the weighing device (11). In use, movement of the pressure adjusting handle (24) initiates delivery of a shot from the group (13), which movement also activates the weighing device (11) in one mode of operation. Thus, a barista can use the weighing device to calibrate the "perfect shot" using the weight and time measurements displayed thereon.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to weighing devices for coffee machines, and in particular to weighing devices for espresso coffee machines and espresso coffee machines incorporating such devices. [0002] Espresso machines mentioned in this context mean coffee machines used in professional catering and "horeca" (hotel / restaurant / community) applications. Background technique [0003] In an espresso machine, coffee grounds are stuffed (squeezed) into a portafilter, which is a portable container that holds the grounds and has a filter in its base. The handle is then connected to the group, which is the connection on the machine through which the brewed water is delivered. Water at brew temperature is forced from the packet through the coffee grounds in the handle and into the receiving cup to create the traditional Italian coffee drink known as espresso. A single shot of espresso is called a "one shot." [0004] An example of an espresso machine of the ...
