Embodiment Construction

[0025] The drawings and the following description are only intended to illustrate the preferred embodiments. It should be noted that, from the following discussion, alternative embodiments of the structures and methods disclosed herein should be understood as feasible alternatives that can be employed without departing from the principles of the claims. For ease of understanding, the same reference numerals are used to designate common elements in the drawings.

[0026] The present invention provides a plenoptic otoscope capable of overcoming the problem of poor data quality of existing otoscopes for feature extraction for otitis media diagnosis. In one embodiment, the plenoptic sensor is added to a conventional digital otoscope and an optional filter module inside the otoscope instrument. Through such addition, three-dimensional (3D) shape, translucency, and / or specific color information can be captured.

Abstract

A plenoptic otoscope enables three-dimensional and/or spectral imaging of the inside of the ear to assist in improved diagnosis of inflammations and infections. The plenoptic otoscope includes a primary imaging system and a plenoptic sensor. The primary imaging system includes an otoscope objective and relay optics, which cooperate to form an image of an inside of an ear at an intermediate image plane. The plenoptic sensor includes a microimaging array positioned at the intermediate image plane and a sensor array positioned at a conjugate of the pupil plane. An optional filter module may be positioned at the pupil plane or one of its conjugates to facilitate three-dimensional and/or spectral imaging.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to an otoscope for imaging a human or animal ear. Background technique [0002] Imaging of the inside of a human or animal ear is a common task for physicians. Typically, doctors use an otoscope to look inside a patient's ear. This test is a common procedure when trying to diagnose an ear infection. Most physicians use a manual otoscope, which is a simple magnifier combined with an illuminator. The images the doctor sees only exist in the doctor's memory. Therefore, comparing different images seen at different times is difficult and not objective. [0003] There are digital otoscopes that have a digital camera either embedded in the otoscope or on the end of a fiber optic cable used to direct light from the instrument head to an external module. Then view the numerical data on an external display. The digital otoscope is marketed as a solution for telemedicine applications. Cameras currently used in digita...
