Abstract

The method comprises the following four steps of (1) performing preprocessing by adopting median filtering; (2) extracting a red component; (3) performing morphological operation to look for optimal background estimation; and (4) segmenting a binary image by Otsu. The stroke characteristics of Chinese characters are reserved while the details of the characters are enhanced. For a degraded historical inscription rubbing image, the invention provides a self-adaptive degraded non-uniform illumination image binarization segmentation algorithm based on background estimation. The method provided by the invention has the novel effects that optimal background estimation based on blind / no reference image space quality evaluation is found, and an experiment result shows that the method can carry out more accurate character segmentation on the degraded Chinese characters.
