Embodiment Construction

[0021] A method of vehicle diagnostic knowledge transfer is proposed to assist service technicians in the field of vehicle fault diagnosis by utilizing the experience of other technicians who have seen and solved similar repair problems in the past. Using an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, vehicle diagnostic knowledge is communicated to service technicians in the form of resolved repair problems and diagnoses or cases in a case database. The structure of the case records contained in the case database captures important characteristics or attributes of the diagnostic service process. Additionally, the data contained in the case record is derived from service records created by vehicle service technicians. Service technicians can access case records in the case database by initiating a search request from a user system. For example, a technician may search for a specific symptom or a combination of a specific symptom and vehicle make. In addition to the transfe...

Abstract

A method for knowledge transfer of vehicle diagnostics includes receiving a search request from a user system and accessing a case record database in response to the search request. Each case record includes a case record number attribute, a set of vehicle description attributes, a set of bookkeeping attributes, a set of system attributes, a set of symptom attributes, and a set of action attributes. The method further includes searching a case record database for a case record responsive to the search request. If a case record is found that responds to the search request, it is communicated to the user system.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to vehicle diagnostic knowledge transfer, and more particularly to a method of verifying the contents of vehicle repair case records and communicating them to vehicle technicians to assist in vehicle diagnosis and repair. [0002] The diagnostic and repair process for most vehicles is based on the experience of the individual service technician. A service technician's knowledge can be supplemented by information on paper, such as service manuals, which describe the structure and operation of the vehicle. Each garage may have one or more expert service technicians who assist less skilled or less experienced service technicians in the diagnostic and repair process. Typically, the scope of diagnostics and repairs performed by a single body shop is limited. Accordingly, the amount of knowledge acquired by expert technicians located at each garage may be limited to specific repairs performed by that garag...
