Embodiment Construction

[0020] Improved systems and methods are disclosed for estimating one or more parameters of a received M-QAM or q-ASK signal, such as amplitude and signal-to-noise ratio. The first embodiment of the present invention is method 100, which is based on a number of transmitted symbols (d k ) to estimate the amplitude of the M-QAM signal from known or determinable phase data. If the receiving device should transmit M-QAM symbol d k , such as in systems using pilot signals, this data can be used to estimate the amplitude, A, as follows:

[0021] A ^ = Re ( Σ k = 1 N r k exp [ - jθ ( ...

Abstract

The present invention discloses an improved system and a method for estimating one or more parameters (e.g., amplitude and SNR) of receiving signal (e.g., M-QAM or q-ASK signal). In a first embodiment of the present invention, the amplitude of M-QAM signal is estimated on the basis of known or ascertainable phase data related to a plurality of transmitted symbols, a plurality of received symbols (101) corresponding to the transmitted symbols are returned; each of the received symbols is multiplied by a plurality of unit vectors with a phase to produce a group of products, wherein, the sign of the phase is reverse to the sign of the transmitted symbols; the products (105) are added together, and then the real part of the sum of products is determined. The absolute values of the known transmitted symbols are added to produce a total value. The real part of the sum of products is divided by the sum of transmitted values to produce an estimated value (111) of amplitude of the M-QAM signal.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates generally to communication systems and techniques utilizing quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). More specifically, the present invention relates to techniques for correctly demodulating M-carry QAM signals at the receiver. Background technique [0002] Today, M-ary QAM (M-QAM) is used with several mobile data communication devices to provide high-speed data transmission. However, the main disadvantage of M-QAM is its computational complexity. One prior art approach that addresses this shortcoming involves the use of quadratic M-QAM groups, such as 16QAM, 64QAM, and 256QAM. The square group can be conceptualized as comprising two independent q-ary amplitude shift keyed (q-ASK) modulated signals as real and imaginary parts (in-phase and quadrature components of the modulated carrier), where q = M . [0003] For example, a 16-QAM signal includes two indep...
