Embodiment Construction

[0008] The present invention generally relates to methods of suppressing estrus in any species of animal, including horses. Methods within the scope of this invention include those effective in suppressing estrus by administering a single dose or by administering limited doses over a broad interval of time. In some embodiments, animals for which the methods of the invention are used include horses, pigs, dogs, cows, sheep, and goats.

[0009] Allylgestrol is also known as 17-α-allyl-17-β-hydroxyestr-4,9,11-trien-3-one, allyl trenbolone, and tetraenylestrone (Regumate) . Allylgestrol is also assigned CAS No. 850-52-2. As used herein, the term allylregestin includes the aforementioned compound and any suitable formulation comprising the same. Allylrenogest can be administered in various sustained release formulations, such as liquid formulations, microparticle formulations, or any combination thereof. Average daily sustained release dosages of allylgest within the scope of t...

Abstract

The present invention generally relates to methods of suppressing estrus in breeding or competitive animals comprising parenterally administering to breeding animals an estrus suppressing amount of 17-a-Allyl-17-ss-hydroxyoestra-4,9,11-trien-3-one. According to the method of the present invention, estrus can be suppressed for any of a variety of periods including 30 days or more. Furthermore, the method of the present invention includes repeated sustained release doses for an indefinite period.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention is in the general field of veterinary methods. More specifically, the present invention relates generally to methods of suppressing estrus. Background technique [0002] Progestins are often used in competition, performance and breeding (breeding) mares to suppress the expression of estrus for a period of one week to a month or more. Unfortunately, daily treatment is an impractical method for administering allylregestin or progesterone to a mare. In particular, daily administration is inconvenient, time consuming, expensive for the animal owner and stressful for the animal. The recent development of biodegradable controlled-release drug delivery systems offers the possibility of replacing long-term daily treatment regimens with single-administration products. This formulation reduces labor and associated handling stress for animals and producers, providing veterinarians with an important means of maintaining effective adherence...
