Problems solved by technology

Errors in GPS or Wi-Fi locks (not reflected in the uncertainty measure) will result in bias in blended locks
[0016] Also, Wi-Fi and GPS fixes are usually colored by the past and do not represent independent information, so using a weighted sum is certainly not optimal in these cases

Embodiment Construction

[0029] Aspects of the invention provide an algorithm for blending Wi-Fi fixes with GNSS fixes to provide overall good positioning accuracy. The main elements of the Wi-Fi and GNSS hybrid solution are discussed in conjunction with different embodiments of the present invention.

[0030] In one embodiment of the invention, the blended position is fed back to the GNSS Kalman filter and the blended position replaces the position state in the Kalman filter.

[0031] In one embodiment of the invention, intelligent blending is performed by blending Wi-Fi fixes with GNSS fixes only when GNSS needs assistance.

[0032] In one embodiment of the invention, constrained blending is performed by modifying the strength of blending based on Wi-Fi and GNSS fixes.

[0033] Wi-Fi positioning can be server-based or STA-based, where a STA is a station operable to use the Wi-Fi protocol. In server-based positioning, each STA sends a list of BSSIDs and RSSs to a server, such as Google or Navizon, ...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a system and method for hybrid positioning using a blend of Wi-Fi and GNSS. The device (300) includes a Wi-Fi network location processing engine (302), a GPS location processing engine (306), and a hybrid processing engine (304). The Wi-Fi network location processing engine (302) can generate a Wi-Fi location signal based on a Wi-Fi location signal from a Wi-Fi network product. The GPS location processing engine (306) can generate GPS location signals based on GPS location signals from a GPS. The hybrid processing engine (304) may determine whether to generate a third location signal based on the Wi-Fi location signal, to generate the third location signal based on the GPS location signal, or to generate the third location signal based on the Wi-Fi location signal and the A GPS location signal generates the third location signal, and may be based on a combination of the Wi-Fi location signal, the GPS location signal, and a combination of the Wi-Fi location signal and the GPS location signal. One generates the third position signal.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to positioning technology and, in particular, to hybrid positioning by blending multiple positioning technologies. Background technique [0002] Location-based services are an emerging field of mobile applications that take advantage of the ability of new devices to calculate their current geographic location and report that geographic location to a user or service. Some examples of these services include identifying a person or object's location in the context of entertainment, work, health, or personal life. [0003] Location-based services require instantaneous and reliable positioning systems that work no matter where they are. Since no single positioning technique can meet this need, combining different positioning techniques to compensate for the limitations of the individual techniques themselves may provide better results. Such combinations typically include the combination of Global Navigation Satellite System (...
