According to the virtual machine online snapshot generating and deleting method, in the online snapshot generating process, virtual machine rear-end IO reading is firstly paused, then the name and size of a disk snapshot file are modified, a snapshot file is established, a virtual machine snapshot is established, and finally the virtual machine rear-end IO reading is restored; in the snapshot deleting process, firstly it is judged that the deleted snapshot is provided with a sub-node or not, the snapshot without the sub-node is directly physically deleted, it is further judged that each snapshot with node is provided with only one sub-node or not, only logic deletion and recording can be firstly performed if the snapshot is not provided with only one sub-node, the virtual machine rear-end IO reading is required to be paused if the snapshot is provided with only one sub-node, then snapshot merging and father node redefining operation are performed, the snapshot is physically deleted, and finally the virtual machine rear-end IO reading is restored. The virtual machine online snapshot generating and deleting method solves the problems of long-time virtual machine shutdown and backup, long-time service interruption and the like and can be used for virtual machine online snap-shooting.
