Abstract

Various systems and methods are provided to facilitate power communication over conventional cables. This may be accomplished in a fuel dispensing environment, where the fuel dispenser may include: a diode coupler communicatively coupled to a conventional cable to receive power communication from one or more back room components over the conventional cable during a power outage; and A broadband communication modem for communicating with the one or more back room components, wherein the diode coupler provides power from the power communication to the broadband communication modem. A repeater may be used at the fuel dispenser and / or back room components to determine whether to use power communication or conventional communication based on whether power is available at the components communicating via conventional cables. In addition, fail-safe protection of conventional communication circuits is provided when power communication is active.
