Abstract

According to one aspect, a computer-implemented method includes receiving a request to read a plurality of files from a tape, and obtaining a tape directory identifying an area on the tape that stores the files. The tape directory is used to map each file to one of the regions on the tape where the respective file is stored. A first subset of files stored in the same first region on the tape is also ordered in a first order. The computer-implemented method also includes concurrently ordering a second subset of files stored in the same second region on the tape in a second order, and instructing the tape drive to read each file in the first subset according to the first order.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to data storage systems, and more particularly, the present invention relates to accessing files stored on magnetic tape using block groups. Background technique [0002] In a magnetic storage system, a magnetic transducer reads data from and writes data to a magnetic recording medium. Data is written to a magnetic recording medium by moving a magnetic recording transducer to a location over the medium where the data is to be stored. A magnetic recording transducer then generates a magnetic field that encodes data into the magnetic media. Data is read from the media by similarly positioning a magnetic read transducer and then sensing the magnetic field of the magnetic media. Read and write operations can be independently synchronized with the movement of the media to ensure that data can be read from and written to desired locations on the media. [0003] An important and ongoing goal in the data storage industry is to ...
