Technique to fill silencers

A method for forming odd-shaped mufflers is achieved by first introducing an unfilled muffler insert having a desired number of pipes and partitions within a two-piece shaped tool. Fibrous material is introduced within desired compartments formed between the shaped tool and unfilled insert to form a filled insert. The shaped tool and filled insert are then placed on a winding device. A yarn thread is then wound and secured around the fibrous material within a gap created between the two pieces of the shaped tool. The winding device and shaped tool are then removed from the filled and wound muffler insert. The wound and filled muffler insert may then either be pressed into a previously formed muffler shell, or alternatively, the muffler shell may be formed around the wound and filled muffler insert to form the muffler.

Preformed sound absorbing material for engine exhaust muffler

This invention provides preforms of continuous glass fiber strands for use as the sound absorbing material in an engine exhaust muffler. Preferably, the material is made of glass fibers of E glass compositions. With this invention, the strands are fluffed up, not directly in the muffler, but in a cavity that is made of a perforated shell matching the muffler shape. During this operation, a powder binder also is blown in with the fibers. This blowing operation is completed by forcing hot air through the preform which melts or cures the binder and allows it to bond the fibers together.

Method and apparatus for improved noise attenuation in a dissipative internal combustion engine exhaust muffler

The use of fiber metal or similarly high flow resistance and high acoustic transparency material as a liner for traditional acoustically absorptive media in a dissipative muffler exhibits improved low frequency sound attenuation, reduces backpressure, and eliminates media entrainment or "blow-out" phenomenon which results in longer muffler life. The same class of materials may also be used to fashion an element that provides linear occlusion inside an otherwise line-of-sight type of muffler, where the occluding element provides improved impedance-matching acoustic absorption. Disclosed embodiments providing linear occlusion minimize traditional increases in muffler backpressure by incorporating helical, conical, and annular members in mufflers with round ducts. To maximize attenuation, a muffler according to the invention may feature both a fiber metal fill liner and a fiber metal linear occlusion element. Further, the liner that connects the inlet and outlet ports of the muffler may feature an offset, elbow, or turn that would simultaneously allow it to provide means for linear occlusion.
