Embodiment Construction

[0036] FIG. 1 is a block diagram illustrating an exemplary enterprise 4 having a computing environment 10 in which a plurality of users 12A- 12N (collectively “users 12 ”) interact with an enterprise planning system 14 . In the system shown in FIG. 1 , enterprise system 14 is communicatively connected to a plurality of computing devices 16A- 16E (collectively "computing devices 16") via network 18. Users 12 interact with their respective computing devices 16 to access enterprise planning system 14 .

[0037] For purposes of example, the present invention is described with reference to a business planning system, such as a business financial or budget planning system. The techniques described here can be readily applied to other software systems that use multidimensional data, including other large enterprise software systems. Examples of other enterprise software systems include order management systems, inventory management systems, sales force management systems, business i...

Abstract

Describes the technology of automatically generating report templates based on the relational database storing multidimensional data according to the relational database schema. For example, a template generator may generate a base report template from a database schema, and then generate a user report template by importing the base report template. The template generator updates the user report template in response to modifications requested by the user and maintains an activity log to record the modifications. If the database schema has changed, the template generator automatically updates the user report templates by regenerating the base and user report templates and reapplying modifications from the activity log to the user report templates. As described here, the database schema can be a relational star schema.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to software systems, and more particularly to computing environments for enterprise business planning. Background technique [0002] Enterprise software systems are typically complex, large-scale systems that support many, eg, hundreds or thousands, concurrent users. Examples of enterprise software systems include financial planning systems, budget planning systems, order management systems, inventory management systems, sales force management systems, business intelligence tools, enterprise reporting tools, project and resource management systems, and other enterprise software systems. [0003] In many cases, users may wish to publish data from one enterprise software system to other third-party software tools. For example, a user may wish to publish data from a financial planning system to reporting and analysis software. However, many enterprise software systems, such as financial planning systems, store data in the f...
