Abstract

Stabilization of aqueous resinous dispersions containing a pigment of a divalent metal such as strontium chromate is disclosed. Stabilization is achieved by incorporating a chelating agent in the dispersion.

Description

field of invention The present invention relates to anionic aqueous dispersions containing divalent metal pigments and to the stabilization of these dispersions. Background technique Aqueous anionic resin dispersions containing divalent metal pigments such as strontium chromate are known for coating aluminum substrates, with the strontium chromate providing outstanding corrosion protection. Unfortunately, these dispersions are unstable. It is believed that the divalent metal cations cause the anionic resin to settle out of the dispersion. It would be desirable to stabilize the aqueous resin dispersions described above. Summary of the invention According to the invention, the aqueous anionic resin dispersion comprises divalent metal pigments, in particular divalent metal pigments which also contain chromium. The aforementioned pigments, such as strontium chromate, are stabilized by adding chelating agents to the dispersion. The stable aqueous dispersion is particularly...
