The method comprises the following steps of: detecting the network transmission conditions of the Internet protocol television video receiver and a video server; regulating the cache size of the Internet protocol television video receiver according to the network transmission conditions; and caching a video stream from the video server by utilizing a regulated cache of the Internet protocol television video receiver, and playing the video stream. The Internet protocol television video receiver comprises a detection unit, a regulation unit and a caching unit, wherein the detection unit is used for detecting the network transmission conditions of the Internet protocol television video receiver and the video server; the regulation unit is used for regulating the cache size of the Internet protocol television video receiver according to the network transmission conditions; and the caching unit is used for caching the video stream from the video server by utilizing the regulated cache of the Internet protocol television video receiver, and playing the video stream.
