Embodiment Construction

[0019] In the following, the invention will be explained in more detail with reference to exemplary embodiments and drawings. The illustrated embodiments relate to the concept of differentiated handling for network traffic. like figure 1 As shown, the concept is applied in a mobile communication network according to 3GPPTS. However, it is to be understood that the concepts shown are also applicable in other types of communication networks eg using fixed access technologies such as DSL, fiber optic access or coaxial cable access.

[0020] figure 1 A communication network environment in which concepts according to embodiments of the present invention can be applied is schematically shown.

[0021] The communication network environment includes a UE 10 , which may also be referred to as a terminal, and a number of network components 22 , 24 , 26 , 30 . Among these network components is the Radio Access Network (RAN) 22 . The RAN 22 is based on a certain type or types of radi...

Abstract

To allow efficient differentiated handling of network traffic in a network segment, a network address translator (120) performs network address translation on incoming data packets to be transmitted to the network segment and / or outgoing data packets to be transmitted from the network segment. Network address translation replaces source network addresses with replacement network addresses in incoming data packets. In the output data packet, the replacement network address is included in place of the destination address, and the network address translation replaces the replacement network address with the destination network address. In each case, the alternative network address is selected according to the traffic class of the data packet. In a network segment, differentiated processing of data packets based on alternative network addresses is provided.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method for differentiated handling of network traffic, and to corresponding network devices. Background technique [0002] In a communication network, differentiated processing of network traffic can be used to distinguish different types of network traffic. For example, the forwarding process of data packets (ie, the manner in which data packets are forwarded on the way towards the destination) can be controlled to provide a certain quality of service (QoS) level depending on the class of traffic. In other examples, the handling of network traffic can also be differentiated with respect to charging, ie, one traffic class can be billed differently than another traffic class. Typically, traffic classification rules, such as packet classification rules, are defined to enable differentiation between different types of network traffic. [0003] For example, in a mobile communication network, network traffic related to a specifi...
