[0027] In the following description, for purposes of explanation, numerous details are set forth in order to provide a more thorough understanding of the present invention. It will be apparent, however, to one skilled in the art that the present invention may be practiced without these details. In other instances, well-known structures and devices are shown in block diagram form in order to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the invention.

[0028] overview

[0029] Validating a document requires determining what rules are required to validate the document. The set of rules required to validate a document is referred to herein as a document rule set. The operation of determining a set of document rules is referred to herein as document rule collection. Described here is a document rule collection technique for decentralized schemas.

[0030] Techniques for document rule collection are described within the context of a specific model of decentralized schema. In order to describ...

Abstract

Rules are collected for each structured element in a document. The rules that apply to any particular instance of an element depend on the hierarchical position of the instance within the document. The rules are collected and efficiently organized in a manner that accounts for this dependency. Once the rules are collected, the rules may be further processed. For example, there may be dependencies between calculations. The computation of the calculations is scheduled in a manner that accounts for these dependencies. Once the rules are collected and further processed, the rules are used to validate the given document.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to validating documents marked up by a markup language such as XML. Background technique [0002] The approaches described in this section are approaches that can be followed, not necessarily approaches that have been previously conceived or followed. Therefore, unless otherwise stated, it is not assumed that any of the approaches described in this section are admitted to be prior art solely by virtue of their inclusion in this section. [0003] The use of Hierarchical Markup Language for structuring and describing data is widely recognized in the computer industry. An example of a markup language is XML. [0004] Data structured using the hierarchical markup language is composed of nodes. Nodes are delimited by a pair of corresponding start and end markers, which not only delimit the node, but also specify the name of the node. For example, in the structured data snippet below, [0005] 5 <d> 10< / d> ...
