[0030] The present invention provides an embedded coding scheme method for High Order Ambisonics (HOA) content. A very attractive application for this approach is the distribution / broadcasting of high-resolution spatial audio content via a bitstream that is backwards compatible with existing surroundsound decoders. Using an existing surround sound decoder, this bitstream decodes to regular surround sound, while the new, enhanced decoder is able to decode full 3D audio from the same bitstream. Thus, the "chicken-and-egg problem" that typically slows down large-scale deployment of new monolithic (or self-contained) content formats and corresponding decoder implementations significantly can be circumvented. The content provider can start distributing content of a new quality that still advantageously enjoys the basic support of the large number of decoders installed in the field (ie at potential customers).

Abstract

The invention introduces a new concept for hierarchical coding of HOA content. A method for encoding a hierarchical audio bitstream comprises rendering a HOA input signal to surround sound, encoding the surround sound for a base layer output signal, decoding the encoded surround sound to obtain a reconstructed surround sound signal, performing dimensionality reduction on the received HOA input signal, calculating a residual between the dimensionality-reduced HOA signal and the reconstructed surround sound signal, encoding the residual signal,and multiplexing structural information about the HOA input signal, the encoded residuals and the encoded surround sound into a bitstream to obtain a hierarchical audio bitstream.
