Problems solved by technology

Although useful, real-time monitoring of hematocrit levels often leads to conservative planning (determining hematocrit levels after changes have occurred) rather than predictive planning for preventing excessive hemodilution during CPB (knowing how changes will affect hematocrit)

Embodiment Construction

[0021] In the following detailed description, several specific embodiments of compounds, compositions, devices, systems and methods are disclosed. It will be appreciated that other embodiments can be conceived and made without departing from the scope or spirit of the present disclosure. Therefore, the following detailed description should not be read in a limiting sense.

[0022] The present disclosure generally relates to patient fluid management, etc., before, during, or after procedures where blood dilution may be an issue, such as CPB. The present disclosure describes methods, devices, and systems that provide information about a patient's fluid volume rather than just the hematocrit level of the patient's blood. As used herein, a "patient's fluid capacity" is a blood-free compartment that can be added to the patient's blood compartment to avoid reaching, or just reaching but not falling below a user-defined low hematocrit limit Specific volume is the amount of fluid. ...

Abstract

Methods, devices and systems provide information regarding fluid capacity of a patient; i.e., the amount of hematocrit free fluid that can be added to the system to avoid reaching, or to just reach but not fall below, a predetermined low hematocrit limit before, during or after surgeries in which hemodilution may be a concern, such as cardiopulmonary bypass, rather than providing only information regarding hematocrit levels. The fluid capacity of the patient may be displayed to allow a health care provider to make decisions regarding effects of addition of fluid to the blood compartment of the patient.

Description

[0001] field [0002] The present disclosure generally relates to devices, systems, methods, and the like for managing a patient's blood fluid volume and hematocrit before, during, or after a procedure, such as cardiopulmonary bypass. Background technique [0003] Hemodilution can lead to numerous perioperative and postoperative morbidity and mortality. For example, hemodilution can lead to inadequate oxygen delivery and ischemic organ damage, renal failure, heart failure, etc. During procedures such as cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), a patient is connected to a device with a fluid circuit typically primed with a crystalloid solution with and without red blood cells (RBC). The volume of the circuit filled with the RBC-free solution serves to dilute the hematocrit of the patient's blood. [0004] Therefore, a patient's blood fluid volume and hematocrit level are typically determined prior to performing CPB. In addition to the patient's blood fluid volume, the volume of the CPB...
