Embodiment Construction

[0061] By way of background, the present invention employs self-expanding materials such as polymer gels. The material can employ a hydrophilic polymer network that absorbs water but does not dissolve. The hydrophilic character can be provided by functional groups on the polymer such as hydroxyl, carboxyl or amide functional groups. Preferably, the self-expanding polymer network comprises at least one compound comprising -COOH, >C=0, -OH or -NH 2 base monomer. Resistance to solubility is a result of the presence of structural crosslinks, crystalline regions or entanglements. Such materials are typically referred to as "hydrogels". Hydrogels consist of two components, a constant amount of polymer network (i.e. gel) and a variable water content. In the anhydrous state (before injection), the material is often referred to as a xerogel. Anhydrous materials are hygroscopic and absorb / absorb water from their native environment to hydrate the network. A self-expanding polymer n...

Abstract

The present invention provides a tissue expander (10) comprising a self-inflating core (12or 2e) having a non-inflated state and an inflated state and a coating (14) surrounding said core (12or 12e), in which said core (12or 12e) comprises a compacted self-inflating material and said coating comprises a fluid impermeable material having a plurality of apertures therethrough for allowing the passage of fluid to the core (12or12e) and in which the coating (14) is separable or separated from the core (12or 12e) such as to allow the coating to provide a support function during use. The invention also provides a method of manufacturing the product.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to expandable components, particularly but not exclusively to components known as tissue expanders. Such dilators are used by physicians, veterinarians, and dental professionals to expand patient tissue prior to corrective or augmentation surgery, typically with a controlled rate of expansion and can also be configured with time-delayed expansion capabilities. In one aspect, the invention particularly relates to the interrelationship between a coating and an expandable material within the coating, wherein the coating is detachable from the expandable material. Background technique [0002] Currently, tissue expanders are a key component of reconstructive plastic surgery and are used, for example, in the treatment of congenital anomalies and acquired defects. [0003] EP10776126 describes a known form of tissue expander and from it it is understood that they generally comprise dried and then compressed material which will ...
