[0009] The systems and methods described below enable a vehicle to automatically detect a (inferred) vehicle collision as a secondary detection technique in the event that a sensor-based primary collision sensing module fails to detect or report a vehicle collision. The method performed by the disclosed system generally includes monitoring a vehicle communication bus for messages indicative of proper operation of the communication bus or of a vehicle system module (VSM) operating on the bus, detecting a loss of a bus message indicative of a communication failure on the bus , determine that the vehicle has experienced an acceleration indicative of a vehicle collision, and based on the detection of a communication failure on the bus and the acceleration indicative of the collision, place a call or otherwise initiate to a remote facility such as a call center or Public Safety Answering Station (PSAP) ) communications to report vehicle accidents.
