Embodiment Construction

[0026] best practice

[0027]The invention relates to data transmission networks equipped with adaptive antennas. In particular, the invention compensates for antenna pattern optimization to a mobile station when data to be transmitted to a mobile station is interspersed with data intended for other mobile stations located in different antenna beams than that mobile station.

[0028] In the following description, for purposes of explanation and not limitation, details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the invention. It will be apparent, however, to one of ordinary skill in the art that the invention may be practiced in other embodiments that depart from these details. In other instances, detailed descriptions of well-known methods, devices, and circuits are omitted so as not to obscure the description of the present invention.

[0029] Figure 5 illustrates a method for implementing adaptive antennas in an EGPRS / GPRS network. As illustrated in Fig...

Abstract

In a radio network which employs adaptive antennas for transmission of data to mobiles methods and apparatus are provided for improving the reception of transmitted data. When a block is to be transmitted in a first beam of the antenna and the block contains information for the mobile in the second beam, a modulation and coding scheme is used for the transmission of the block such that the modulation and coding scheme provides greater protection to the portion of the block containing information for the mobile in the second beam. The use of greater protection for the portion of the block which includes information for the mobile in the second beam increases the probability that the mobile in the second beam can receive and correctly decode the information intended for the mobile in the second beam in the block.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to packet data communications networks, and more particularly to a method and apparatus for compensating antenna pattern optimization when a transmitted message includes information about more than one mobile station spaced apart. Background technique [0002] The growth of commercial communication networks, especially the rapid growth of cellular radiotelephone networks, has forced network designers to seek ways to increase network capacity with communication quality not below user-acceptable thresholds. At the same time, the use of mobile communication devices for data transmission rather than talking has become increasingly popular among users. The possibility of sending and receiving electronic mail and gaining access to the World Wide Web with a browser is frequently discussed as services that will be used more and more in wireless communication networks. In response to this, communication network designers...
