Embodiment Construction

[0070] Figure 1 is a simplified block diagram of an information management system IMS in which the present invention may be used. In this example, IMS is implemented as a client / server system. A plurality of client terminals CT such as graphics workstations access a server S (or server group) via a network NW such as a local area network or the Internet. The server includes or is connected to a database DB. The information processing logic in the above server and the data in the above database constitute the IMS. The above-mentioned database DB is composed of structure and content. A preferred embodiment of the present invention provides an improvement on the structure of the database DB of the above-mentioned IMS. The above server S also includes various processing logics. A communication logic provides basic server functionality for communicating with the aforementioned client terminals. It would be nice to have a user interface logic for creating various user interface...

Abstract

An information management system for managing biochemical information (200). The biochemical information (200) comprises data sets (202) and each data se t comprises a variable value matrix containing variable values organized as ro ws and columns; a row description list, in a variable description language, of the rows in the variable value matrix; a column description list, in a variable description language, of the columns in the variable value matrix; and a fixed dimension description, in a variable description language, of on e or more fixed dimensions that are common to all values in the variable value matrix. A benefit achieved by storing the numerical values as a scalar matri x is that the matrix can be analyzed with many commercially available data- mining tools, such as self-organizing maps or other clustering algorithms, that do not readily process dimensioned values.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an information management system (abbreviated as "IMS") for managing biochemical information. Background technique [0002] Biochemical research brings in vast amounts of data at a rate never before seen in any scientific discipline. One problem underlying the present invention relates to the difficulty of organizing large amounts of rapidly changing information. IMS systems can be free-form or structured. A well-known example of a free-form IMS is a research institution's local area network, where information producers (researchers, etc.) can use any commonly available or proprietary application such as word processors, spreadsheets, databases, etc. Enter information in any format. A structured IMS refers to a system that has system-wide rules for storing information in a unified database. [0003] A problem with a structured IMS is that it cannot accommodate new types of information, or entering new types of infor...
