Abstract
Description
[0001] The present disclosure relates to the field of lubricating greases, particularly lubricating greases for off-highway, agricultural and wind energy markets, having improved anti-wear and extreme pressure properties and high biodegradability. Technical Field
[0002] Liquid lubricants are not suitable for many applications because they tend to "drift" from the lubrication point. These applications concern in particular bearings (ball, roller, needle), rolling and plain bearings, open gears, metal cable and chain drives, and more generally applications that do not include sealing systems.
[0003] For these applications, greases are used, which are solid or semifluid substances resulting from the dispersion of a thickener in a liquid lubricant, optionally integrating additives that give it special properties.
[0004] Currently used greases generally include mineral oils of fossil origin, which are not highly biodegradable. Document US2018 / 0030367 discloses a grease composition.
[0005] Industrialists are increasingly seeking to formulate biodegradable grease compositions, in particular greases that require regular renewal, for example for applications involving a high risk of leakage.
[0006] Document US2021 / 0277323 discloses a grease with little impact on the environment.
[0007] In some applications, especially for the off-highway market (construction equipment or agricultural machinery type) and the wind energy market (wind turbines), the need for more powerful machines in increasingly harsh conditions means that their lubricants must offer a significant performance increase in terms of extreme pressure properties in addition to biodegradability.
[0008] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a grease composition comprising a base oil and a thickener, both of which are biodegradable, and which also has excellent antiwear and extreme pressure properties and good adhesion. Summary of the invention
[0009] More specifically, the present invention relates to a grease composition comprising, relative to the total weight of the grease composition:

[0028] In the rest of this document, unless otherwise stated, expressions such as “between… and…”, “from… to…” and “ranging from… to…” are equivalent and are intended to include these limitations.
[0029] Unless otherwise stated, quantities in the product are expressed by weight relative to the total weight of the product. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0030] The present invention relates to a grease composition, which comprises, relative to the total weight of the grease composition:
[0031] a) 70% to 95% by weight of one or more base oils, each of which has a 28-day biodegradability of at least 60% measured according to standard OECD 301B,
[0032] b) 2% to 20% by weight of one or more thickeners chosen from metal salts of fatty acids, each thickener having a 28-day biodegradability of at least 60% measured according to standard OECD 301B,
[0033] c) 0.5 to 10% by weight of calcium carbonate having a D50 particle size greater than or equal to 3 μm and a D90 particle size greater than or equal to 10 μm,

[0035] Preferably, the grease composition of the present invention is biodegradable.
[0036] In the sense of the present invention, a "compound" is said to be "biodegradable" if its biodegradability after 28 days, measured according to standard OECD 301B, is at least 60%.
[0037] In the sense of the present invention, a "grease composition" is termed "biodegradable" if the biodegradability of the grease composition, calculated on the basis of the biodegradability of the base oil(s) and the thickener(s), weighted by the proportions of the base oil(s) and the thickener(s) in the grease composition, is at least 60% at 28 days.
[0038] For example, if the grease composition comprises:
[0039] - v% by weight of a base oil, whose 28-day biodegradability measured according to standard OECD 301B is Bv%;
[0040] - y wt% of a base oil having a 28 day biodegradability measured according to OECD 301B of By %;
[0041] - z % by weight of thickener, whose 28-day biodegradability measured according to standard OECD 301B is Bz %;
[0042] - q% by weight of calcium carbonate;
[0043] —t weight % of additives,

[0176] The invention will now be described by means of the following examples which are of course non-limiting illustrations of the invention.
[0177] Example
[0178] Example: Preparation of grease composition
[0179] Prepare the grease according to the following scheme:
[0180] The grease used in the examples was prepared as follows: thickener and calcium carbonate were placed in base oil and heated until the soap melted. After cooling, additives were added in different proportions and the grease composition was homogenized in a grinder.
[0181] Table 1 details the grease compositions prepared and tested, giving the proportions expressed by weight relative to the total weight of the grease composition.
[0182]
Table 1
[0183]
[0184]
[0185] The one or more base oils include a mixture of two ester type oils. The one or more base oils have a 28 day biodegradability of 70% and 75% measured according to standard OECD 301B.
[0186] The thickener is lithium 12-hydroxystearate. The 28-day biodegradability of the thickener is 97%.
[0187] CaCO3(1) is calcium carbonate having a D50 particle size of 2.14 μm and a D90 particle size of 8.04 μm.
[0188] CaCO3(2) is calcium carbonate having a D50 particle size of 7.08 μm and a D90 particle size of 14.9 μm.
[0189] The antiwear agent is an antiwear agent comprising a phosphate amine mixture.
[0190] The additive package includes a sulfurized ester type extreme pressure additive, an antioxidant and a metal passivation additive.
[0191] Calculated based on the biodegradability of the base oil and the thickener, the 28-day biodegradability of the composition CI4 of the present invention is 67.26%.
[0192] The particle size of the calcium carbonate used in the examples was measured using a laser diffraction method well known to those skilled in the art.
[0193] In this example, a Malvern Mastersizer Hydro R diffractometer was used.
[0194] If macroagglomerates are present (eg, larger than 400 μm in size), mechanical sieving can be performed using two different sieve sizes (400 μm and 800 μm) to reduce the macroagglomerates.
[0195] If macroaggregates are still present after mechanical sieving, the sample can be dried at 100 °C to further reduce the number of macroaggregates.
[0196] For the interpretation of the results, the proportion of macroagglomerates with a cut-off of, for example, 100 μm, 50 μm or 25 μm (depending on the agglomerate size) may not be taken into account. The cut-off has no significant effect on the measurement of the D50 or D90 particle size used in the examples.
[0197] Example 2: Determination of anti-wear and extreme pressure properties
[0198] The antiwear and extreme pressure (EP) properties of the grease compositions detailed in Table 1 were determined and the results are shown in Table 2.
[0199]
Table 2
[0200]
[0201] The results in Table 2 show that the grease composition CI4 of the present invention has better antiwear and extreme pressure properties than the grease compositions CC1, CC2 and CC3.
[0202] Although grease composition CI4 does not include an antiwear agent, it exhibits better antiwear properties than grease compositions CC1 and CC2 that include antiwear additives.
[0203] The grease composition CI4 comprising calcium carbonate of the desired particle size exhibits better anti-wear properties than the composition CC3 comprising calcium carbonate of other particle sizes.
[0204] Example 3: Determination of Adhesion
[0205] The adhesion of compositions CC1 and CI4 was tested using the water spray resistance test.
[0206] The viscosity of the composition at 40° C., measured according to standard ASTM D445, is 680 cSt.
[0207] Table 3 gives the adhesion properties.
[0208]
Table 3
[0209]
[0210] The results in Table 3 show that composition CI4 has very good adhesion. Therefore, the grease composition of the invention is particularly suitable for components of off-road vehicles with low rotation speeds.
