Problems solved by technology

If the displayed image has the same physical size as the CRT's useful image area (i.e., the area where the image is displayed and is visible to the viewer), image displacement and distortion will blank out some areas along the edges of the CRT, making the distortion invisible to the viewer. very obvious
To solve this problem, traditional TV equipment over-expands the image so that the physical size (picture area) of the image is larger than the useful image area of the CRT

Embodiment Construction

[0010] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the television device does not unduly enlarge the television image from a television broadcast or another source such as a DVD player (hereinafter referred to as source television image or source image). Instead, the television device scales the source image using its full resolution, or crops the source image and then scales the source image. The following description gives several examples of scaling and cropping methods for a display panel with a native screen resolution of 1366x768 pixels.

[0011] In the first scaling example shown schematically in Fig. 2, the source image is an image specified by the NTSC standard and has an intrinsic image resolution of 640x482 pixels (area 30). Scale (expand) the source image to a size of 1024x768 pixels (area 20), maintaining the aspect ratio of the source image. In other words, the scaling factor (the ratio of the resolution of the scaled image to the resolution of the sour...

Abstract

The present invention provides a method for scaling and cropping an image for display on a television screen of native resolution. Unlike conventional method which over-expands the image, the method described herein crops the image (optionally) and scales it to fit the native resolution of the display screen without over-expanding the image. The method includes the steps of receiving a source television image having a native image resolution, scaling the source television image using a scaling ratio to produce a scaled television image having a resolution equal to or less than the native screen resolution in both a vertical and a horizontal direction, and displaying the scaled television image on the television screen. The scaling ratio may be the same or different in the vertical and horizontal directions.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method of processing images for display on a television screen and, in particular, to a method of scaling and cropping images from broadcast or other sources for display on flat panel displays. Background technique [0002] In a conventional television device using a cathode ray tube (CRT) display, an image formed on the CRT is affected by the earth's magnetic field. The magnetic field shifts and distorts the image, and affects the image in a non-uniform manner depending on the physical location of the TV set on Earth and the orientation of the TV set relative to the Earth's magnetic field. If the displayed image has the same physical size as the CRT's useful image area (i.e., the area where the image is displayed and is visible to the viewer), image displacement and distortion will blank out some areas along the edges of the CRT, making the distortion invisible to the viewer. The words are very obvious. To solve th...
