A global speech user interface (GSUI) comprises an input system to receive a user's spoken command, a feedback system along with a set of feedback overlays to give the user information on the progress of his spoken requests, a set of visual cues on the television screen to help the user understand what he can say, a help system, and a model for navigation among applications. The interface is extensible to make it easy to add new applications.

The user can thus selectively navigate between the video content and stills in a web-like hyperlinked fashion. In one embodiment, when a user is navigating through still images, the television program or video content which was being viewed is displayed in a small window overlaid on the still image being displayed. Also, when the set top box captures a requested image from the still image broadcast channel, the set top box preferably also pre-caches or pre-loads other related still images based on the probabilty that these related images will be subsequently requested by the user. The invention also includes an embodiment which provides user requested still images "on demand" on a dedicated "search" channel.

Various attributes define how the community group is created and how membership is defined. Members can invoke the service and join an active session thereby allowing them to view and potentially post content that is then displayed in a chat window. A software application downloaded to the set top box creates the chat window on the television screen. Content may comprise text and/or video clips identified by the member. Members can post messages by using their remote control or other device to provide text entry which is processed by the set top box application. Input is received by a social networking server which then distributes the content to the group members.

When a voice is inputted to an operation terminal (200), the audio input is subjected to voice recognition in a voice recognizing unit (107) and keywords are extracted. A search condition creating unit (110) creates a search condition from the extracted keywords. A search unit (111) searches for control items that can be options to choose from. A multiple viewing program recommendation system employing a commercial detection module and a multiple viewing module is disclosed. In response to a generation of viewing recommendations of two or more program during the same time slot, the multiple viewing module controls a display of a recommended program having the highest viewing priority on a television screen while the recommended program is being aired on one of the television channels until the commercial detection module detects a commercial being aired on the television channel. An on-vehicle gateway is provided that is interposed between a plurality of buses for transferring data, and that is capable of performing appropriate control according to situations.(1) Data coming from one bus are analyzed to filter false data and unwanted data not to feed them to the other buses. (2) When the state of an on-vehicle device is inquired, it is controlled according to the state of an IG power source whether the inquiry is to be made to the device or the on-vehicle gateway answers the inquiry by proxy. (4) The response of the gateway is changed according to a driver. For example, if the years of driving experience of the driver is within one year, the gateway stops data transfer so that no television screen or navigation screen is displayed during driving, and that the transmission/reception of the telephone by the hands-free system is unavailable.

The present invention provides systems and methods for providing television schedule and/or listing information to a viewer, and for allowing the viewer to link, search, select and interact with information in a remote database, e.g., a database on the internet. The television schedule and/or listing information can be displayed on a variety of viewer interfaces, such as televisions screens, computer monitors, PCTV screens and the like. A television schedule system and method for displaying television schedule information on a television screen includes a program guide having a schedule information area that depicts the programs that are being presented on each channel at each time during the day. There is provided a hand held cursor controller system for use particularly with interactive television and computer presentation graphics. A mobile device responds in real time to media content presented on a media device, such as a television. The mobile device captures temporal fragments of audio-video content on its microphone, camera, or both and generates corresponding audio-video query fingerprints. The query fingerprints are transmitted to a search server located remotely or used with a search function on the mobile device for content search and identification. Audio features are extracted and audio signal global onset detection is used for input audio frame alignment. Video frames are analyzed to find a television screen in the frames, and a detected active television quadrilateral is used to generate video fingerprints to be combined with audio fingerprints for more reliable content identification.
