A method and apparatus wherein a software scheduling agent resides on a communication network and/or client device, such as location-aware wireless communication appliances, television set top boxes, or other end user client devices is disclosed. The software scheduling agent is part of a probabilistic modeling system in which the scheduler operates to perform constrained random variation with selection. Digital content is generated, organized, and stored on the communication network and/or the client devices. An electronic digital content wrapper, which holds information in the form of data and metadata related to the digital content is associated with each item of digital content. Contextual profiles for each user and each item of digital content are established by the users and the network and maintained by a service provider on the communication network. The software scheduling agent compares the contextual digital content profile for each item of digital content to the contextual user profile for each user to determine which digital content should be offered for presentation to each user. The comparison and determination of which items of digital content should be offered for presentation to which users is performed by a process of constrained random variation. After the software scheduling agent determines which items of digital content would most likely be relevant or interesting to the user, the digital content is transmitted, either in whole or in part, at predetermined times over the communication network to the appropriate client devices. The digital content is then stored, either in whole or in part, in cache memory on the client device until an appropriate time when the digital content is digitally packaged and presented to particular users over those user's client devices.

Athletic performance monitoring systems include components for sensing performance data and/or displaying desired information to users. These files can be served over the network via a networked television STB or a media center computer, to a display monitor during normal usage. Embodiments cause new voicemail notifications to be displayed during typical operation of a television with the STB or media center computer and provide users with an interface for responding to new voicemail notifications, and reviewing, managing, and playing back voicemail. A satellite TV security system including a TV satellite operated by a satellite TV provider directed to a television set of a satellite TV subscriber that defends the satellite TV provider from illegal reception of TV signals from a TV satellite. An addressable integrated receiver/decoder (IRD) positioned in the TV set top box has an assigned identification number and a smart card positioned in the IRD has an assigned identification number. A security module is provided that is integrated with the IRD. The system comprises one or more Internet information servers, an Internet terminal unit, and television set having a wireless remote control device and an audio-visual monitor. The Internet terminal unit is operably connected to the infrastructure of the Internet and embodies a GUI-based Internet browser program, supporting the TCP/IP networking protocol. The wireless remote control device includes a bar code symbol reader for reading bar code symbols, and an IR-based communication circuit for establishing a wireless communication link with the Internet terminal unit. A WWW-site guide is provided to television viewers. On the guide, a plurality of bar code symbols are preprinted along with a plurality of Web-site descriptions. Each preprinted bar code symbol is encoded with information related to one of the plurality of URLs. The bar code symbol reader is programmed for reading the bar code symbols in the WWW-site guide. In response to reading each bar code symbol, the bar code symbol reader produces information related to one of the URLs, and this information is transmitted, over the wireless information communication link, to the Internet terminal unit. Thereupon, the GUI-based Internet browser uses the TCP/IP networking standard and the produced information to automatically access the HTML-encoded document specified by the related URL, and automatically display the accessed HTML-encoded document on the audio-visual monitor of the television set, for viewing purposes.

A portable content storage device is configured to hold digitally encoded video content on a disk drive. A user connects the device to a publicly located compatible interactive kiosk that stores several encoded content units, such as feature-length films. The user selects content units, and the kiosk copies the selections onto the device. At home, the user connects the device to a compatible set-top box that presents the content units as an output signal to a television set. The set-top box accumulates information related to the use of the video content units, such as how much of a content unit has been viewed and/or how many times it has been viewed. The set-top box then writes the information to the device. The present invention creates a composite user profile based on individual profiles for each user detected who is to be used in the composite user profile, some of whom need not be present in front of the television. Each user's preferences may be weighted the same as each other user's or users may have differing weights assigned to their preferences.

The invention permits a user to receive closed captioning services wherever he or she may be viewing video content with an audio component in accordance with a video/audio content display system (e.g., television set, computer monitor, movie theater), regardless of whether the content display system provides closed captioning capabilities. Also, the invention permits a user to receive closed captioning services independent of the video/audio content display system that they are using to view the video content. In one illustrative aspect of the present invention, a portable and universal closed caption receiving device (closed caption receiver) is provided for: (i) receiving a signal, which includes closed captions, from a closed caption provider while the user watches a program on a video/audio content display system; (ii) extracting the closed captions; and (iii) providing the closed captions to a head mounted display for presentation to the user so that the user may view the program and, at the same time, view the closed captions in synchronization with the video content of the program.

A system and method for enabling a user to request and download selected media files from distributed content provider sites via the Internet. The system includes a plurality of user sites each including a player/receiver housed in an enclosure having a simple user interface, a plurality of content provider sites, and a transaction server site. The player/receiver enables the user to connect to the transaction server via the Internet to access a program guide listing available media files. The user is then able to select a desired file and, via the player/receiver and Internet, request the transaction server to authorize download of the selected file. The file request along with file encryption and transfer instructions are sent from the transaction server via the Internet to the content provider site storing the requested file. Requested files are then dynamically encrypted by the content provider site and securely downloaded to the requesting player/receiver. The requesting player/receiver is uniquely capable of decrypting a downloaded file concurrent with playing back the file on a conventional home television set and/or audio system.

A multiple Interactive Program Guide (IPG) system provides different television programming and different IPGs to several different users respectively. A single set-top box is capable of providing programming and scheduling data to several different television sets. Each of the different IPGs share a common database.
