Embodiment 1

[0073] Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of childhood blindness. Supplementation with arginine or glutamine leads to improved clinical outcomes in preterm infants. In this study, the protective effect of Arg-Gln administered orally alone and in combination with DHA was examined in puppies undergoing the OIR model.

[0074] Methods: Nursing dams and puppies were returned to normal room air on postnatal day 12 (P12) and gavaged twice daily with: Arg-Gln, DHA, Arg-Gln + DHA or excipients (P12-P17). Treat the normoxic pup in the same manner. On day P17, the pups were perfused with FITC-labeled dextrose. One eye was paraffin-embedded, cross-sectioned, and H&E (hematoxylin and eosin) stained for analysis of preretinal neovascularization. The retina of the second eye was removed and microscopically analyzed for vascular growth, as assessed by vascular density.

[0075] Results: Compared with vehicle, Arg-Gln dipeptide DHA reduced preretinal neovascularization t...

Embodiment 2

[0077] Example 2 - Nutritional composition for enteral administration

[0078] The composition of the invention may be a nutritional composition (complete nutrition or nutritional supplement) for enteral administration. That is, it is designed for oral, intragastric or transpyloric use. The composition of the invention may be a milk-based, soy-based or other food source based infant formula or adult nutritional composition. The compositions can be formulated as powders, liquid concentrates or ready-to-use liquid nutritional composition formulas for the infant, pediatric and adult populations. By including acceptable levels of vitamins and minerals, the compositions of the present invention can be prepared as a complete nutritional meal. Compositions of the invention may provide minimal, partial or total nutritional support. The invention may be in the form of a dietary product, such as an infant formula, a premature formula, a human milk fortifier, a food product, a dairy s...

Abstract

The subject invention provides for the administration of docosahexaenoic acid in preventing pathological proliferation of blood vessels. The compositions of the subject invention are particularly advantageous because they are stable, bioavailable, and can be formulated in an aqueous solution.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related patent applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 014,180, filed December 17, 2007, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] People with vision impairment face many challenges performing everyday activities and / or may not be able to fully see what is around them. Of particular interest to the present invention is vision impairment resulting from retinal damage, which occurs in conditions such as retinopathy of prematurity or diabetic retinopathy. [0004] Diabetic retinopathy is a progressive disease characterized by abnormalities in the blood vessels of the retina caused by diabetes, such as thinning of vessel walls, leaky vessels, and bleeding and scarring around new blood vessels. Diabetic retinopathy causes impaired vision in a person, which can lead to severe blurred vision and potentially blindness. [0005] Diabetes affects more th...
