The invention discloses a method for recognizing an iris based on an edge gradient direction pyramid histogram and belongs to the technical field of computer image processing. The method comprises the following steps of: performing denoising and gray correction on a normalized iris image based on an iris sample image and an iris image to be recognized; extracting edge pixel points and reserving strong edge points by using sobel operators in the horizontal direction and vertical direction; dividing the edge points into eight types according to the gradient directions of the edge points; mapping an edge graph into a multi-resolution multi-dimensional histogram set; calculating correlation quantity of two histogram sets of the iris sample image and the iris image to be recognized according to a pyramid matching kernel formula so as to acquire similarity of the two iris images; and finally, judging whether the iris image to be recognized is consistent with the iris sample image according to a similarity threshold. By the method, an ideal recognition rate can be acquired, and operation time of characteristic extraction and recognition is greatly reduced; and the method has great significance for embedded application of iris recognition.
