Embodiment Construction

[0015] EPP is advantageously employed to route requests and messages over the network. As mentioned above, each registry has an EPP connection to the registry for registration and renewal of domain names. If the Registry provides additional domain name-related services in addition to the domain name provisioning service, the Registry may have to maintain other modes of communication with the Registry in order to access these additional services, such as domain name suggestion services. This is likely to increase the complexity of the infrastructure on the registry side, usually because the registry may communicate with multiple registries. Having the ability to use EPP connections to access all offered services will greatly reduce registry costs. These reduced costs have the potential to be shared with end users, increasing the registry's competitive advantage.

[0016] On the registry side, having a single EPP connection to each registry will greatly reduce the cost of main...

Abstract

Method and system for routing EPP requests over a network are provided. The EPP request can include XML namespace information and optionally XML sub-product information. A gateway can receive the request and analyze the namespace and in some instances, sub-product information to determine the service to which the request is directed. Thereupon, the gateway can route the request to the appropriate service by consulting a routing table that can have status and connectivity information for all the available services.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention is primarily concerned with routing requests over a network. As Internet usage has grown exponentially, the demand for Internet-related services has grown rapidly. Due to the increased use of the Internet, the demand for domain names has grown rapidly. As a result, the demand for domain name-related services is also growing. Domain name related services may include domain name creation, domain name registration renewal, etc. Often, a website becomes the primary vehicle for establishing an online presence for a domain name. In order to meet the growing demand for domain name-related services, entities providing these services must provide these services in an efficient and cost-effective manner. [0002] The Domain Name System (DNS) is the part of the Internet infrastructure that translates human-readable domain names into the Internet Protocol (IP) numbers needed to establish TCP / IP communications on the Internet. DNS allo...
