Abstract

The present invention provides an autonomous control system for a vehicle that controls the speed and steering of the vehicle to operate in a lane keeping mode or a lane changing mode. The position sensor senses the position of surrounding vehicles. The lane determination system identifies the current lane in which the motor vehicle is located. A source of incoming lane routing data provides information about the routing of the current lane. The controller provides commands to the steering system and speed control system to operate the vehicle in a lane keeping mode or a lane changing mode. The driver may override control of the control system by providing manual input to the steering system or speed control system.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present application relates to a system that assists the driver of a vehicle to change lanes or keep the vehicle in the same lane while driving. Background technique [0002] The driver of the vehicle usually controls the speed and route of the vehicle by steering, accelerating and braking the vehicle. A cruise control system can be used, which allows the driver to set the desired speed of the vehicle. Normally, if the driver steps on the brake pedal, the control of the cruise control system is cancelled, and the control of the vehicle speed is returned to the driver. If the driver depresses the accelerator pedal, the vehicle can remain in cruise control while the accelerator pedal is still depressed and the vehicle speed increases. After braking, the cruise control system may allow the vehicle to return to the previously set speed. The adaptive cruise control system has multiple sensors that sense the speed of the running vehicle at the front of the...
