The video source switching method comprises the following steps: a client side detects the code rate of a local currently-played video source and the current network transmission speed; the client side acquires the code rates of playable video sources respectively; when the client side determines that the ratio of the current network transmission speed to the code rate of the currently-played video source reaches a preset threshold, the client side switches the currently-played video source to a video source of which the code rate meets a preset condition. Through adoption of the technical scheme, the ratio of the current network transmission speed to the code rate of the currently-played video source is used as a criterion for judging whether to switch the video source, and according to the code rates of the playable video sources at the client side, the final target video source is selected to play, so that a blind video source switching action is avoided on the basis of ensuring smooth video playing, and further the burden on a system is reduced and the network performance is effectively improved.
