[0054] women and samples

[0055] Serum samples were collected between September 2002 and March 2003 from the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU) and Accident and Emergency (AE) at the Merton NHS Hospital Trust, London, from a positive early pregnancy test with low-grade 441 women of abdominal pain and / or vaginal bleeding. Estimate age at pregnancy based on last menstrual period, as EPAU standard practice. The final diagnosis was confirmed by follow-up of pregnancy results, laparoscopy, and histology of the products of pregnancy. 7 / 441 patients were lost to follow-up and 58 / 441 patients were stored incorrectly, so these were discarded. Of the remaining 376 patients, 175 women had a final diagnosis of active pregnancy; 175 women had spontaneous abortion (unavoidable, incomplete, complete); and 26 women had ectopic pregnancy. Two patients who were initially diagnosed with ectopic pregnancy by current assessment practice had spontaneous abo...

Abstract

A method for determining the likelihood of an ectopic pregnancy and spontaneous miscarriage is described, by measuring the levels of markers, especially hCG and CA-125 which have been found to be characteristic of these conditions. Preferably measuring these biomarker levels at earliest possible presentation of patients with general clinical5 symptoms and applying cut-off values described determines the likelihood of an ectopic pregnancy and spontaneous miscarriage.

Description

[0001] field of invention [0002] The present invention relates to methods of determining the likelihood of ectopic pregnancy and spontaneous abortion by measuring the levels of markers that have been found to be characteristic of these conditions. Background technique [0003] Ectopic pregnancy is the leading cause of maternal mortality in first trimester pregnancy in the UK and North America, second only to ruptured oviduct or interstitium. Although the cause was maternal circulatory failure, delayed intervention and misdiagnosis were clinical reasons. Therefore, early and accurate diagnosis before rupture is extremely important. [0004] Currently, the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy is based on transvaginal ultrasound and quantitative serum measurements of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Increasingly sensitive ultrasound and hCG tests are effective in diagnosing ectopic pregnancy in most women and have reduced the need for more invasive diagnostic laparoscopy. Howev...
