Embodiment

[0062] Some of the methods used below can be found in SONTAKE et al., "Hsp90 regulation of fibroblast activation in pulmonary fibrosis" (2017) JCI Insight, Vol. 2, Issue 4, Entry e91454. > (incorporated herein by reference in its entirety).

[0063] Identification of naltrexone as a candidate therapeutic agent for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) using a computational approach. We used a previously published transcriptome dataset (GSE53845) recorded from lung biopsies of 40 IPF patients and 8 healthy controls. An IPF disease signature was created based on the mRNA expression data and a linear model was fitted for each gene to estimate the effect of IPF disease status and gene expression change (log2 fold change) in diseased versus normal control samples. The IPF gene signature was queried in the LINCS database, a resource with a large number of expression profiles. This database is a catalog of gene expression profiles collected from human cells subjected to chemical and ...

Abstract

Some embodiments of the invention include methods for treating an animal for fibrosis comprising one or more administrations of one or more compositions comprising one or more opioid receptor inhibitors. Other embodiments of the invention further include other fibrosis treatments. Still other embodiments of the invention include methods for treating a human for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, comprising administering one or more compositions comprising naltrexone and optionally administering one or more compositions comprising pirfenidone, nintedanib, or both. Additional embodiments of the invention are also discussed herein.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application 62 / 362,169, filed July 14, 2016, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] Fibrosis is the formation of excess fibrous connective tissue. In certain instances, fibrosis results in the accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins. [0004] Several compounds are known to treat fibrosis, but their treatment is inadequate. For example, pirfenidone and nintedanib are newly FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. However, pirfenidone had no effect on respiratory symptoms. Neither pirfenidone nor nintedanib had any effect on mortality. Thus, attempts to develop clinically effective fibrosis treatments have been unsuccessful, and a cure for fibrosis remains to be found. [0005] Certain embodiments of the present invention address one or more of the above-mentioned deficiencies. F...
