A non-invasive, early stage method to obtain quantitative measures of mild cognitive impairment useful in diagnosing and following degenerative brain disease or closed head injuries by utilizing the image data from individual patient positron emission tomographic scans to construct a cognitive decline index that serves as a diagnostic and screening tool to reveal the onset of mild cognitive impairment and nervous system dysfunction which are sequelae of degenerative brain diseases and closed head injury. The method involves using weighted values of brain region intensities derived from comparing scans of normal subjects to a scan of the patient to calculate a cognitive decline index that is useful as a diagnostic tool for mild cognitive impairment. Methods and apparatus for handling exceptions as a part of normal program control flow are disclosed. According to one aspect of the present invention, a method for processing an exception in an object-based system includes obtaining source code that includes a code segment which is arranged to explicitly specify instructions pertaining to an exception check. The method also includes creating a final internal representation of the source code at least in part by removing a call associated with the exception check, and generating machine code associated with the final internal representation. In one embodiment, the method further includes executing the machine code. Provided is a brake control apparatus for a vehicle which detects an amount of brake-pedal operation by means of an electric signal, and then calculates a braking force demanded by a driver from the electric signal, and thereby generates the demanded braking force. An automated shifting system for a manual transmission having a neutral clutch connecting an engine to a multiple ratio transmission, the transmission having servo operated gear shift mechanism. A driver-controlled gear shift switching mechanism is used to activate the servos that effect ratio range changes. A range sensing redundancy strategy for the ratio range switches provide improved protection against an unintended change in direction due to three-bit separation between bits of the valid codes and to a range sensing switch failure strategy by identifying when a range change commanded by the driver exhibits a single-point fault condition. A fault condition due to a single-point sensing switch failure is identified even in those instances when a range change commanded by the driver allows continued normal control system operation, although the driver is notified of the failure by a system warning device.

A cooling system has a configuration in which a cooling system for an inverter device and a motor generator also serves as a cooling system for a battery. In this configuration, a control device performs temperature-raising control of the battery when a battery temperature is below a prescribed temperature lower limit value. The control device controls an operation of a switching valve such that cooling water from a cooling medium path is outputted to a bypass path. Further, if a cooling water temperature is lower than a prescribed temperature, the control device controls the inverter device such that a power loss during a switching operation in a switching element included in the inverter device becomes larger than a power loss during normal control. A voltage regulator (10) having an undervoltage protection circuit 11 and a method for protecting against an output voltage out being less than a predetermined level. The voltage regulator has an undershoot limitation circuit (11) coupled between a feedback network (30) and a regulation section (42). A power factor correction circuit (46) is connected to the regulation section. An output voltage out from the power factor correction circuit (46) is fed back to the feedback network (30), which transmits a portion of the output voltage to the undershoot limitation circuit (11).
