Embodiment Construction

[0011] Software that has been modified to include new functions or to improve existing functions is typically tested before being released for wider or commercial use. A suite of tests developed to test earlier versions of the software usually exists in the database. However, fully applying the test suite is time-consuming and resource-intensive when software modifications include a limited number of changes.

[0012] Embodiments of the present disclosure identify, from an existing database of test suites, a list of one or more functions executing that cover lines in a software program that have been modified. One or more criteria selected based on, for example, priority and / or resource usage are then applied to further reduce the number of tests on the list. Accordingly, embodiments of the present disclosure achieve an order of magnitude reduction in testing of modified software.

Abstract

A method of testing a change in a software code includes, searching a database of tests to identify a subset of the tests that include a function that executes the change, forming, from the subset, a multitude of groups each having a different execution path. The tests in the same group have the same execution path. The method further includes prioritizing the tests within each of the multitude of groups based on one or more testing characteristics, and selecting, from each of the groups, one or more of the prioritized tests to test the change.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Patent Application No. 63 / 024,328 filed May 13, 2020 pursuant to 35 USC 119(e), the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety. technical field [0003] This disclosure relates to testing of software, and more particularly to regression testing of changes in software code. Background technique [0004] During iterative and / or incremental software development, software code may be changed over a relatively short period of time to accommodate the addition of new code or to facilitate modifications to existing code. However, such additions or modifications may create new bugs in the code. Regression testing (RT) can be used to ensure that any additions or modifications are bug-free and do not adversely affect other parts of the software. Regression testing is effective when applied as part of a system's continuous integration / deployment process. ...
