Problems solved by technology

While such devices have some utility in alleviating the effects of bruxism, they still suffer from a number of problems or disadvantages
One problem with existing contacts is that in order for the contact to function successfully to utilize the jaw open reflex, which is a reflex action triggered by clenched incisors, the contact needs to be this large or go into the mouth to such an extent that the incisors touch the contact portion before the rear teeth touch each other, so that the wearing of the splint is uncomfortable

Embodiment Construction

[0052] Referring specifically to Figures 4-9, one form of the bite splint of the present invention is shown. This form of bite splint, generally designated 2, is made of plastic material and molded to the shape of the patient's front teeth so as to be suitable for receiving the six centrally located front teeth 40 of the upper arch of the patient's mouth, for example two pair of upper incisors and upper pair of canines; the splint forms an upper portion, generally designated 4, having a plurality, typically six, of pockets, recesses, depressions or the like 6 for receiving therein the centrally located upper Front teeth 40. Each pocket is intended to accommodate one tooth so that six teeth are collectively accommodated in the six pockets. The pockets 6 or the like are one form of retaining means of the present invention for holding the splint in place in the mouth and allow precise positioning of the splint in the mouth while also securing the splint to the teeth to hold the ...

Abstract

The present invention is directed to an improved form of a splint (2) having a contact portion (8) for maintaining the vertical separation(s) of rearwardly opposed teeth (44) in the oral cavity of a patient wearing the splint (2). The splint (2) is provided with a contact portion (8) for contacting opposed forward teeth (42) to the forward teeth (40) to which the splint is attached such that movement of the opposed forward teeth (40, 42) with respect to the contact portion (8) maintains the spacing(s) of the rearward teeth (42). The contact portion (8) is provided with a central (10) or intermediate section to which a forward portion (20) is angularly inclined. The splint is optionally provided with a third portion (30) angularly inclined to the central or intermediate portion (10) for stabilising the position of the jaw or teeth to prevent permanent or long term change in the jaw position.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to an oral device, and more particularly to new forms of improvement on or to an intraoral device. In particular, some embodiments of the present invention relate to intraoral devices of the type worn by patients suffering from certain conditions that occur during sleep, such as conditions associated with insomnia, bruxism, etc., wherein the device is provided with contact portions for Make contact with the opposing teeth to prevent teeth at the patient's back from touching each other. More specifically, some embodiments of the present invention relate to occlusal devices having improved contact portions and methods of using such devices for limiting the forces of bruxism and thereby reducing or eliminating damage to teeth, including restorative or prosthetic teeth. Such damage is caused by the voluntary or involuntary jaw clenching and grinding that often occurs when the patient is asleep. However, this conditio...
