Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a coating composition, in particular, a coating composition capable of forming a dense paint film, and a coated article comprising a coating layer formed from the coating composition. Background Art

[0002] In the coatings industry, crosslinking agents are widely used to accelerate the crosslinking of polymers and improve the hardness, chemical resistance, water resistance, etc. of the paint film. However, currently commonly used curing agents include allergenic substances, such as aziridine.

[0003] As people pay more and more attention to health and environmental issues, they are increasingly hoping to reduce or even avoid the use of allergenic substances in coatings. However, reducing or avoiding the use of allergenic substances such as aziridine will lead to significant deterioration of paint film performance, especially chemical resistance and water resistance.

[0004] In order to form a dense paint film and reduce the use of allergenic substances, some existing solutions use more complex functional monomers or special resin particle structures to design film-forming resins to obtain dense paint films. These solutions not only involve complex resin synthesis processes, but also have low yields, difficult to control product quality, and a small scope of application, so they are costly and not suitable for industrial production and application. Technicians have also designed some modified curing agents to suppress allergenicity. However, these modified curing agents themselves have complex synthesis processes and high production costs, which greatly limits their scope of application and application prospects in the market. Summary of the invention

[0005] Therefore, the coatings industry still needs improved coating compositions capable of forming dense coating films with excellent resistance properties while containing less or even no allergenic substances.

[0006] The above objectives are achieved by the coating compositions described herein.

[0007] The first aspect of the present application provides a coating composition comprising a film-forming resin, a cosolvent and an additive, wherein the additive comprises at least one nitrogen-containing condensed ring compound or an aromatic-substituted nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound, wherein the nitrogen-containing condensed ring compound or the aromatic-substituted nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound has a ring containing an -NH- bond.

[0008] A second aspect of the present application provides a multi-component coating composition, comprising: A) the coating composition as described above; and B) at least one cross-linking agent.

[0009] A third aspect of the present application provides a coated product comprising a substrate and the coating composition described herein coated on the substrate or a cured coating formed therefrom.

[0010] The present application also provides the use of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds or aromatic nitrogen heterocyclic compounds in coating compositions. The paint film formed by the coating composition of the present invention has excellent compactness, chemical resistance and / or water resistance.

[0011] The inventors have found that the coating composition comprising a nitrogen-containing condensed ring compound or an aromatic-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound described herein can form a dense paint film, improving the chemical resistance and / or water resistance of the paint film. Moreover, the nitrogen-containing condensed ring compound or the aromatic-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound described herein is a non-allergenic substance. Therefore, the coating composition described herein can reduce or even avoid the use of allergenic substances, while obtaining improved chemical resistance and / or water resistance. This is very unexpected.

[0012] In addition, the technical solution of the present application may also have the advantages of simple operation, safety, effectiveness, and low cost.

[0013] The details of one or more embodiments of the invention are set forth in the description which follows. Other features, objects, and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the description and claims. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Methods for preparing aqueous latexes are known in the art, for example, they can be prepared using emulsion polymerization processes known to those skilled in the art. The emulsion polymerization preparation process generally comprises the following steps: optionally, under the action of a suitable emulsifier and / or a dispersion stabilizer and with the aid of stirring, a polymerizable monomer is dispersed into an emulsion in water, and polymerization of the monomer is initiated, for example, by adding an initiator. In the present invention, the polymer particles can be modified by, for example, modification of organic functional groups (including, but not limited to, carboxyl, hydroxyl, amino, isocyanate, sulfonic acid, etc.) to obtain an aqueous latex having desired properties (e.g., dispersibility). Therefore, in the present invention, the term "aqueous latex" includes not only dispersions of unmodified polymer particles in an aqueous medium, but also dispersions of polymer particles modified with organic functional groups in an aqueous medium.

[0042] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a coating composition comprising a film-forming resin, a cosolvent and an additive, wherein the additive comprises at least one nitrogen-containing condensed ring compound or an aromatic-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound, wherein the nitrogen-containing condensed ring compound or the aromatic-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound has a ring containing an -NH- bond. The coating composition described herein can form a dense paint film with excellent water resistance and chemical resistance.

[0043] It is known in the art that nitrogen-containing condensed ring compounds and aromatic-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compounds have special π-electron aromatic rings. In this article, in addition to the special π-electron aromatic ring, nitrogen-containing condensed ring compounds and aromatic-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compounds also have a ring containing -NH-bonds. The nitrogen-containing condensed ring compounds and aromatic-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compounds herein can also be amine compounds containing a benzene ring.

[0044] In some embodiments, the nitrogen-fused ring compound and the aromatic-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound may have a five-membered nitrogen heterocyclic structure and / or a six-membered nitrogen heterocyclic structure.

[0045] In some preferred embodiments, the nitrogen heterocyclic compound and the aromatic substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound have a five-membered nitrogen heterocyclic structure. The nitrogen heterocyclic structure may have one or more nitrogen atoms. Preferably, the nitrogen heterocyclic structure may have 2 to 3 nitrogen atoms, more preferably 3 nitrogen atoms.

[0046] In the aza-fused ring compounds and aromatic-substituted aza-heterocyclic compounds described herein, a five-membered aza-heterocyclic or six-membered aza-heterocyclic structure may be fused or chemically bonded to a benzene ring, wherein the benzene ring may be optionally substituted or optionally aza-. In some embodiments, the benzene ring is unsubstituted. In some embodiments, the benzene ring is not aza-. In some preferred embodiments, the benzene ring is unsubstituted and not aza-.

[0047] In other embodiments, in the nitrogen heterocyclic compound or the aromatic substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound, the benzene ring is substituted. For example, the benzene ring can be substituted by one or more of hydroxyl, alkyl, alkylamino, alkylcarbonyl, alkylsulfonyl, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyimino, alkoxysulfonyl, alkylthio, cycloalkyl, acyl, halogen, haloalkyl, haloalkoxy, hydroxyalkoxy, aryl, aralkyl and heteroaryl. Preferably, the benzene ring can be substituted by one or more of alkyl, alkylamino, cycloalkyl, halogen, haloalkyl, haloalkoxy, aryl, aralkyl and heteroaryl.

[0048] In some embodiments, in the nitrogen-fused ring compound or the aromatic nitrogen-substituted heterocyclic compound, the benzene ring may be substituted with one or more nitrogens. Preferably, the benzene ring is substituted with one or two nitrogens.

[0049] In the aza-fused ring compound, the aza-fused ring is fused to a benzene ring. In some embodiments, the aza-fused ring compound may include benzotriazole Benzimidazole Indole Purine and phthalimide Any combination of one or more of. Preferably, the aza-fused ring compound comprises any combination of one or more of benzotriazole, benzimidazole and indole. More preferably, the aza-fused ring compound comprises benzotriazole and / or benzimidazole. Particularly preferably, the aza-fused ring compound comprises benzotriazole. As described above, the benzene ring may be optionally substituted or optionally aza. The preferred manner of the substituent is as described above.

[0050] In the aromatic substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound, the nitrogen heterocyclic ring may be chemically bonded to the aromatic group. The aromatic group preferably has one or more benzene ring structures. Preferably, the aromatic substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound may be a phenyl substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound. [0051] The inventors were surprised to find that the use of aza-condensed ring compounds or aromatic-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compounds with a ring containing -NH- bonds, especially the preferred embodiments described herein, can improve the performance of the paint film formed by curing the coating composition, such as resistance and hardness. The improvement of resistance includes the improvement of chemical resistance, such as the improvement of at least one of alcohol resistance, acid resistance, water resistance, and heat resistance, especially alcohol resistance and / or water resistance. By adopting some preferred embodiments described herein, the paint film obtained has a resistance comparable to or even better than that using a crosslinking agent (such as polycarbodiimide, PCDI in English), and more preferably improved hardness. It can be seen that by the aza-condensed ring compounds or aromatic-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compounds described herein, especially the preferred methods and dosages thereof, a dense paint film that can be achieved using conventional crosslinking agents can be obtained. This is unexpected by those skilled in the art.

[0052] Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that when combined with a film-forming resin or emulsion, the -NH- bond in the nitrogen-containing fused ring compound or the aromatic-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound will react with the polymer chain of the film-forming resin to introduce the aromatic group and the nitrogen heterocycle into the polymer chain, thereby increasing the hydrophobicity of the paint film, increasing the density of the paint film, and thus improving the resistance of the paint film.

[0053] Based on the total weight of the coating composition, the amount of the aza-condensed ring compound or the aromatic group-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound can be 0.02-3% by weight, preferably 0.05-2.5% by weight, more preferably 0.1-2% by weight, and even more preferably 0.2-1% by weight. The inventors are also surprised to find that only a very low amount of aza-condensed ring compound or an aromatic group-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound can significantly improve the hardness and tolerance of the paint film. Moreover, using the above-mentioned preferred dosage, the paint film has further improved overall properties (including not only hardness and tolerance, but also other paint film properties, such as transparency) after curing. The inventors also found that when the amount of the aza-condensed ring compound or the aromatic group-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound is further increased, for example, 3% by weight or higher, the transparency of the paint film is significantly reduced.

[0104] The preparation of the coating composition of the present invention can be achieved by any suitable mixing method known to those of ordinary skill in the art. For example, the coating composition can be made by adding a film-forming resin or emulsion, a cosolvent and an additive to a container, and then stirring the resulting mixture to uniformity. Alternatively, the coating composition can be made by mixing a portion of the additives (e.g., a nitrogen-containing condensed ring compound or an aromatic-substituted nitrogen heterocyclic compound) with a cosolvent, and then adding a film-forming resin or emulsion and the remaining additives to form a uniform mixture. Water can be added during the preparation of the coating composition.

[0105] Aqueous coating composition of the present invention can be applied by conventional methods known to those of ordinary skill in the art. Preferably, the coating composition is applied by brushing, spraying and other coating methods known in the art. In this way, a coating can be formed by the coating composition of the present invention, and this coating also falls within the scope of protection of the present invention. Therefore, the present invention also provides the coating that can be obtained by the coating composition as herein described.

[0106] The coating composition described herein is suitable for use in applications such as wood, metal, plastic, interior and exterior walls, and is particularly suitable for use as a wood coating composition.

[0107] A second aspect of the present application provides a coated article comprising a substrate and the coating composition described herein coated on the substrate or a cured coating formed therefrom.

[0108] The substrate can be selected from one or more of wood, metal, plastic, cement board, interior wall and exterior wall. The embodiments of the present invention are not limited to these specific examples. Unless otherwise stated, all parts, percentages and ratios reported in the following examples are based on weight. Moreover, all reagents used in the examples are commercially available and can be used directly without further treatment. For example, the PCDI in the following examples is commercially available CARBODILITE E-05. Those skilled in the art can easily purchase or prepare the raw materials used in the examples.

[0112] Test Method

[0113] Pencil hardness : The hardness was measured using a pencil hardness tester according to ASTM D3363.

[0114] Chemical resistance (or liquid resistance) : According to GB / T 4893.1, the resistance of the paint film to ethanol, acetic acid, water and hot water is determined using the corresponding test time. The results are evaluated using a grading standard, where 5 = best and 0 = worst.

[0115] Example 1: One-component coating composition

[0116] The components were mixed according to the components and amounts shown in Table 1. STD 1 sample was used as a control and did not contain nitrogen heterocyclic compounds or aromatic nitrogen heterocyclic compound additives. Samples 1, 2 and 3 used the same amount of nitrogen heterocyclic additives, among which TINUVIN 1130 was a benzotriazole compound without an -NH- bond on the heterocyclic ring; 1,2,3-triazole also did not have a fused ring structure containing an -NH- bond.

[0117] Table 1

[0119] After coating on wood, the sample was allowed to dry on the surface, then baked at 40°C for 2 hours, and then dried at room temperature for 7 days. The properties of the paint film were tested. The results are shown in Table 2.

[0120] Table 2

[0121]

[0122] As can be seen from Table 2, the resistance of sample 1 using TINUVIN 1130 to alcohol, acid and water has been improved to a certain extent; the resistance of sample 2 using benzotriazole to alcohol, acid, water and hot water has been significantly improved, and the improvement in hardness, acid resistance and heat resistance is particularly prominent; the acid resistance of sample 3 using 1,2,3-triazole has been improved, but the resistance to alcohol and water has deteriorated. The experimental results show that benzotriazole has significantly improved the performance of the paint film, and is significantly better than TINUVIN 1130 and 1,2,3-triazole in terms of the comprehensive performance of the paint film.

[0123] Example 2: Two-component coating composition

[0124] The coating composition was prepared in a similar manner to Example 1, except that it also contained component B. The components were mixed according to the components and amounts shown in Table 3. STD 2 sample was used as a control and did not contain nitrogen-containing condensed ring compound or aromatic-substituted nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound additive.

[0125] Table 3

[0126]

[0127]

[0128] After coating on wood, the sample was allowed to dry on the surface, then baked at 40°C for 2 hours, and then dried at room temperature for 7 days. The properties of the paint film were tested. The results are shown in Table 4.

[0129] Table 4

[0130]

[0131] Comparing Table 2 and Table 4, it can be seen that the addition of the crosslinking agent PCDI further improves the performance of the paint film. The results show that the coating formed by the coating composition containing benzotriazole (sample 5) still exhibits significantly better paint film properties, especially significantly improving the water resistance of the paint film.

[0132] It is noteworthy that even compared with the two-component coating composition with the addition of PCDI (control sample STD 2 of Example 2), the paint film with the addition of benzotriazole as a one-component coating composition (sample 2 of Example 1) still exhibits significantly better properties, such as a hardness of grade F and significantly better resistance to alcohol, acid, water and hot water.

[0133] Example 3: Effects of different nitrogen-containing fused ring compounds or aromatic-substituted nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds

[0134] A coating composition was prepared in a manner similar to that of Example 1 and Example 2, except that the resin, nitrogen-containing fused ring compound or aromatic nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound and crosslinking agent shown in Table 5 below were used, wherein "N" means no PCDI was added, and "Y" means 3 g PCDI was added as component B. After coating on the wood, the sample was dried, then baked at 40° C. for 2 hours, and then dried at room temperature for 7 days. The properties of the paint film were tested. The paint film performance results are shown in Table 5.

[0135] Table 5

[0136]

[0137] The results show that benzotriazole, benzimidazole, 2-phenylimidazole and indole can improve the resistance of the paint film. Moreover, after adding PCDI crosslinker, the resistance to alcohol, water and hot water is further improved. The paint film using benzotriazole still shows the best comprehensive chemical resistance.

[0138] Example 4: Using different cross-linking agents

[0139] A coating composition was prepared in a similar manner to Example 3, except that CoatOSil MP 200 epoxy silane compound was used as component B and in the amount shown in Table 6 below. After coating on the wood, the sample was dried, then baked at 40°C for 2 hours, and then dried at room temperature for 7 days. The properties of the paint film were tested. The paint film performance results are shown in Table 6.

[0140] Table 6

[0141]

[0142] The results show that, in the case of samples with benzotriazole added, the addition of epoxy silane compounds as crosslinking agents can further improve the resistance of the paint film to alcohol, water and hot water, and also improve the alkali resistance of the paint film.

[0143] Example 5: Using different film-forming resins

[0144] The coating composition was prepared in a similar manner as in Examples 1-4, except that the film-forming resin shown in Table 7 below was used. After coating on the wood, the sample was allowed to dry on the surface, then baked at 40° C. for 2 hours, and then dried at room temperature for 7 days. The properties of the paint film were tested. The paint film performance results are shown in Table 7.

[0145] Table 7

[0146]

[0147]

[0148] As can be seen from Table 7, the addition of nitrogen-containing fused ring compounds can significantly improve the properties of the paint films of various different film-forming resin systems after curing, especially in terms of alcohol resistance and water resistance. Moreover, in the coating compositions containing different film-forming resins, the combination of the nitrogen-containing fused ring compounds and the crosslinking agent described herein exhibits the best comprehensive chemical resistance.

[0149] The inventors also found through experiments that when the amount of nitrogen-containing condensed ring compounds or aromatic-substituted nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds is further increased (greater than 3% by weight), the transparency of the paint film is significantly reduced. In particular, the inventors can distinguish this significant reduction in transparency with the naked eye.

[0150] Although the present invention is described with reference to a large number of embodiments and examples, it is easy for those skilled in the art to see that the present invention can be changed without departing from the principles disclosed in the foregoing description. For example, without departing from the principles disclosed in the foregoing description, a plurality of features or preferred modes described herein are combined, and the resulting technical solutions should be understood to belong to the contents recorded herein.
