Description

Technical Field

[0001] The invention relates to a battery system comprising a battery system housing and at least one electrochemical battery cell accommodated in the battery system housing. The invention also relates to a vehicle battery and a motor vehicle driven or drivable by an electric motor. Background Art

[0002] Motor vehicles that are electrically driven or driven by an electric motor or can be driven by an electric motor, such as electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, plug-in vehicles or fuel cell vehicles, usually include an electric motor, which can drive one or two axles. For the supply of electrical energy, the electric motor is usually connected to a (high-voltage) battery inside the vehicle as an electrical energy storage device.

[0003] Here and hereinafter, a battery, in particular an electrochemical battery, is to be understood to mean in particular a so-called secondary battery of a motor vehicle. In such a (secondary) vehicle battery, the consumed chemical energy can be restored by means of an electrical charging process (charging process). For example, such a vehicle battery is designed as an electrochemical storage battery, in particular as a lithium-ion storage battery.

[0004] In order to generate or provide a sufficiently high operating voltage, such vehicle batteries or battery systems usually have at least one battery module (battery cell module), wherein a plurality of individual battery cells are interconnected in a modular manner. Alternatively, a so-called Cell2Pack design is possible, in which the battery cells are directly connected together to form a battery system, rather than being combined into modules in advance.

[0005] In order to reduce the heat loss of the current, the interconnected battery modules or battery cells have an internal resistance that is as low as possible. However, due to the low internal resistance, a relatively high short-circuit current occurs in the event of an electrical short circuit. Due to the high packaging density or high energy density in vehicle batteries, there is a risk that a self-reinforcing chain reaction occurs, for example due to an internal short circuit or overcharging of the battery cells, which is called so-called thermal runaway. Thermal runaway of a battery cell can also be triggered, for example, by a strong thermal load on the battery cell, internal manufacturing defects or mechanical damage to the battery cell.

[0006] In the case of thermal runaway, an exponential temperature increase of the battery system or battery cells is to be considered, so that the battery cells heat up very quickly. The energy released in this case can trigger exothermic reactions in adjacent battery cells. Further thermal runaway of other battery cells is also called thermal propagation. Due to the energy released in the form of heat, several hundred degrees are reached in the battery system within a short time. Due to thermal propagation, combustion of the battery system can occur.

[0007] Thermal runaway is an exothermic chemical reaction in which, on the one hand, high heat energy is released and, on the other hand, gases are additionally generated in the battery cells concerned, in particular due to the decomposition of the electrolyte and further side reactions, which leads to high internal pressures in the battery cells. As a result, the battery cells can deform, burn or even release gas pressure explosively. Such thermal runaway or such combustion may also occur in the event of damage to the battery system, for example during a vehicle accident or vehicle crash, due to self-ignition of the vehicle battery.

[0008] The gas flow (gas volume flow) discharged from the battery cells has a high volume flow and a high (gas) temperature. The gas flow carries away electrically conductive and hot particles or solids from the battery cells. There is the risk that if the gas flow hits high-voltage components, such as module connectors, the hot and conductive particles contained in the gas flow will cause further electrical short circuits, so that the fire spreads further or system components are damaged by electric arcs.

[0009] Typically, the battery cells here have a degassing device for the controlled degassing (venting) of ignitable (hot) gases and high-energy particles. Such a pressure equalization device (also called a vent) is implemented, for example, as a bursting disk or an overpressure valve, so that in the event of a fault, the gas flow is degassed (vented) in a preset degassing direction. The ejected gas flow needs to be guided to the environment separately from the high-voltage components and the battery cells in order to prevent the triggering of further thermal runaway reactions in adjacent battery cells, i.e., heat propagation within the battery system. In order to avoid potentially harmful electrical phenomena (short circuits, arcs), the spatial separation of the gas-particle flow section from the high-voltage components is very important.

[0010] For this purpose, it is known, for example, from DE 10 2009 046 385 A1, to separate the battery system housing into a high-voltage area for accommodating high-voltage components and battery cells and a gas area for conducting away the gas flow. Here, it is necessary to seal these two sub-volumes reliably and safely. Viscous materials (adhesives, gap fillers, etc.) or simple seals are integrated, for example, to separate these areas. The use of simple sealing elements often leads to an insufficient sealing effect and to challenges in production, because these simple sealing elements are usually difficult to operate. The use of viscous materials, such as adhesives, etc., also leads to challenges in production (drying time). In addition, the use of adhesives leads to challenges in the maintenance, care or repair of these battery systems.

[0011] DE 10 2014 200 203 A1 describes a battery system in which a deformation device is provided for sealing leaks caused by degassing pressure, which deforms due to the degassing pressure and thereby presses against a sealing element in order to increase the sealing pressure.

[0012] DE 10 2020 125 651 A1 discloses a conical through-opening between a high-pressure area and a gas area, which is surrounded by a coolant line. An opening element is introduced into the wall of the through-opening, which opens in the event of a fault and fills the through-opening (and the degassed battery cell) with coolant. Summary of the invention

[0013] The invention is based on the following object, to provide a particularly suitable battery system. In particular, in the event of thermal runaway, a reliable seal between the high-voltage area and the gas area should be ensured. The invention is also based on the following object, to provide a particularly suitable vehicle battery and a particularly suitable motor vehicle.

[0014] According to the invention, the object is achieved by the invention in terms of a battery system, and in terms of a vehicle battery, and in terms of a motor vehicle, the object is achieved by the invention. The invention also relates to advantageous embodiments and improvements. The advantages and embodiments listed for the battery system can also be transferred to the vehicle battery and / or the motor vehicle, and vice versa.

[0015] The conjunction “and / or” is to be understood here and below in such a way that the features connected by means of this conjunction can be configured both together and as alternatives to one another.

[0016] The battery system according to the invention has a battery system housing and at least one electrochemical battery cell accommodated in the battery system housing. In particular, a certain number of battery cells are arranged in the battery system housing, for example, in the form of a battery module or also as a Cell2Pack embodiment.

[0017] The or each battery cell has a degassing device for degassing, in particular during thermal runaway. The degassing device is designed, for example, as a bursting disk or as a pressure relief valve and has a defined degassing direction. This means that during degassing, the gas flow (such as hot gases and high-energy particles) emerging from the battery cell is directed in a predefined direction.

[0018] The battery system housing is divided by an intermediate wall (partition wall) into a high-pressure area, in which the battery cells and possibly other (high-pressure) components of the battery system are arranged, and a gas area (degassing area, degassing area), which is provided for conducting away the degassed gas flow (degassing gas flow). For example, the intermediate wall in the form of a partition wall is implemented as a bottom plate of the high-pressure area and has a hole-shaped or window-shaped (through) opening, wherein the battery cells are arranged in the high-pressure area such that the degassing direction points toward the opening. In other words, the degassing direction is oriented approximately perpendicular to the opening plane.

[0019] In the following, without limiting the generality, the degassing direction is assumed to be along the Z axis, ie the height direction of the battery system, wherein the opening plane is arranged in a lateral XY plane.

[0020] According to the invention, the intermediate wall has a conical deformation molding portion in the shape of a groove (or also called a crimping edge, a groove, i.e. sickenartige), which tapers obliquely toward the opening in the degassing direction. Here, a sealing element (exhaust seal) surrounding the opening is arranged between the deformation molding portion and the battery cell in such a way that when a pressure increase caused by degassing occurs in the gas region, the sealing element is pressed radially outward from the opening and along the conical inclination of the deformation molding portion in the direction of the battery cell. As a result, a particularly suitable battery system with improved sealing between the high-pressure area and the gas area is achieved.

[0021] The sealing element, which is implemented as a sealing ring or a sealing strip, is preferably elastically compressible or deformably compressible and is arranged at least partially movably along the inclined portion of the modified shaped portion. In the initial state, the sealing element is sealingly located in the region of the opening side of the inclined portion. The sealing element is hereby arranged clamped between the bottom of the battery cell associated with the intermediate wall and the modified shaped portion or the inclined portion with a certain sealing pressure or a certain (mechanical) preload force. The sealing element is thus held between the battery cell and the inclined portion in a force-fitting manner.

[0022] The invention thus realizes a sealing concept for the spatial separation of the high-pressure area and the gas area, in particular in the event of thermal runaway of one or more battery cells in a battery system. The sealing concept combines a local reshaping of an intermediate wall, which spatially separates the battery cell (cell stack) from the gas area, and a surrounding sealing element. The local reshaping is characterized by a conically oriented slope that descends in the direction of the opening for the degassing gas flow.

[0023] Preferably, the battery cells or the cell stack are positioned onto the sealing element. The positioning of the battery cells is simplified by an inclined intermediate wall, wherein the sealing element is compressed or squeezed by the battery cells in the installed state. In the event of thermal runaway of a single cell, a strong pressure increase occurs in the gas region due to the degassing process. Due to this pressure, the sealing element is pressed into a sealing plane that tapers in the direction of the bottom of the battery cell, which leads to a locally increased sealing effect and improves the spatial separation between the high-pressure area and the gas area in the event of thermal runaway, thereby reducing the risk of heat propagation or the risk of short-circuit effects. In this case, the permissible force applied to the battery cell in the Z direction can be exceeded and the sealing effect can be maximized thereby.

[0024] The invention is therefore based on the functional integration of the seal between the high-pressure area and the gas area in the event of thermal runaway in the battery system and the support and positioning of the cell stack by local reshaping in the base plate or the partition wall. The sealing effect is also strengthened by the application of pressure from the gas area and thus acts in a self-reinforcing manner.

[0025] Preferably, no additional machining cuts (or process steps, i.e., process steps) are required during assembly. Due to the simple embodiment, the elimination of additional components and the simplified assembly, the battery system according to the invention is particularly cost-effective. In addition, the sealing concept according to the invention can be transferred to existing battery systems without fundamental changes in the concept.

[0026] For example, it is conceivable that each battery cell or each degassing device is assigned its own opening with a sealing element. Alternatively, each battery cell can be assigned an opening, wherein all openings are surrounded by a common sealing element. The opening is preferably designed approximately in the form of an elongated hole and extends over a plurality of battery cells or degassing devices and is sealed by a common sealing element.

[0027] In an advantageous embodiment, the modified profile or the inclined portion has an edge flange which delimits the opening and which is bent in the opposite direction to the degassing direction towards the battery cell. The inclined modified profile thus ends with a "nose" before the opening. This results in a circumferential "groove" into which the sealing element can be inserted. This advantageously and simply avoids the sealing element from accidentally sliding into the opening. In addition, the positioning of the sealing element is facilitated by the introduced edge flange, which improves the assembly process and reduces positioning tolerances.

[0028] In a conceivable improvement, the modified shaped part has a receiving area connected to the inclined portion, which is used to hold the battery cell. The receiving area can be implemented as a recessed portion, so that the battery cell can be positioned more easily when assembling the battery system. The inclined portion can extend substantially over the entire length of the battery cell. Alternatively, if a larger supporting surface is required for the battery cell, for example for temperature control or cooling purposes, the inclined portion can be shortened and can extend only over a partial area of the battery cell.

[0029] In a suitable embodiment, the opening is covered by a cover. In other words, the opening is closed by a cover, for example, in the form of a groove, in order to protect the individual exhaust gas. As a result, in the event of a thermal runaway, the pressure will initially increase even more strongly. For example, the grooved cover has an opening, a bursting disk or a pressure equalization element at a set point. In the course of a thermal runaway, it can also be provided, additionally or alternatively, that a local melting is caused in the region of the cover, which establishes a direct connection to the gas region.

[0030] An additional or further aspect of the invention provides that the intermediate wall is designed as a cooling plate through which a coolant (cooling fluid, cooling medium) flows or can flow. This means that a coolant line is integrated in the cooling plate. As a result, the battery cells and / or the degassing gas flow can be cooled.

[0031] In a preferred improvement, the sealing element is implemented as a hose through which the coolant can flow, wherein the hose is in particular connected to the cooling plate or to the coolant line integrated in the cooling plate. Therefore, the sealing element can be formed by a hose, which is connected to the cooling plate and through which the coolant flows. Therefore, the sealing and temperature control functions are integrated into one component. In addition, this improvement makes it possible to clamp the entire cell stack in an easier way when assembling the battery system. If the sealing element or the hose is flowed through by the coolant, the internal pressure of the cross section of the hose is increased, so that the battery cell resting thereon is clamped.

[0032] In a suitable configuration, the cooling section is arranged flush with the battery cell. The cooling section can be arranged at or in the intermediate wall or cooling plate. In other words, the cooling section is integrated into the cooling plate, for example as a coolant channel. Alternatively, the cooling section is arranged, for example as a coolant line, on the side of the intermediate wall opposite the battery cell, i.e. in the gas region. This can achieve improved thermal contact with the cell or cell stack, thereby increasing the cooling effect.

[0033] The vehicle battery according to the invention is designed, for example, as a traction battery for an electrically driven or electrically drivable motor vehicle. The vehicle battery has the battery system described above. This provides a particularly suitable vehicle battery that has improved safety, in particular with regard to thermal runaway and heat propagation.

[0034] The electrically driven or electrically drivable motor vehicle according to the invention has a battery system as described above. This creates a particularly suitable motor vehicle. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0045] In all figures, corresponding parts and dimensions are always provided with the same reference symbols.

[0046] Figure 1 An electrically driven or electrically drivable motor vehicle 2 is shown, for example an electric vehicle or a hybrid vehicle. The motor vehicle 2 has an electric motor (not shown in detail) as an electric traction drive, which is connected to a traction battery or vehicle battery 4 for supplying electrical energy.

[0047] The vehicle battery 4 has Figure 2 , an electrochemical battery system 6 is shown having a number of electrochemical individual cells 8. The individual cells 8 are provided with reference numerals merely by way of example in the figure.

[0048] In the following, a description is given of the spatial directions, also in particular in the coordinate system of the motor vehicle (vehicle coordinate system), for an exemplary installation of the battery system 6 in the vehicle floor. The abscissa axis (X axis, X direction) is oriented in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle (direction of travel), while the ordinate axis (Y axis, Y direction) is oriented in the transverse direction of the vehicle and the utility axis (Z axis, Z direction) is oriented in the height of the vehicle.

[0049] In order to generate or provide a sufficiently high operating voltage, the battery cells 8 can be interconnected in a modular manner to form at least one battery module. Figure 2In the embodiment shown in , the battery system 4 is implemented in a so-called Cell2Pack design, wherein the battery cells 8 are directly connected together as a cell stack (cell stack) 10, rather than being combined into modules in advance. For example, the battery cells 8 are stacked or arranged next to each other in the X direction.

[0050] For example, the battery cell 8 is implemented as a prismatic cell and therefore has a prismatic or square cell housing 12. The housing surfaces of each cell housing 12 that are opposite to each other in the X direction or the arrangement direction or the stacking direction are referred to as the end sides of the corresponding cell housing 12 below. The sides of the cell housing 12 that are oriented perpendicular to the Y direction are referred to as narrow sides. The battery poles 14, 16 of the corresponding battery cell 8 are respectively arranged at the narrow sides of the cell housing 12 that are opposite to each other. The battery cell 8 is arranged on the intermediate wall 18 in the battery system housing 20, wherein the housing surface that rests on the intermediate wall 18 is referred to as the bottom plate of the corresponding cell housing 12.

[0051] For example, each battery cell 8 or each cell housing 12—as in Figure 3 As can be seen in FIG. 1 , there is a degassing device 22 on the bottom plate side for degassing (exhausting) in particular during thermal runaway. The degassing device 22 has degassing openings (exhaust openings) through which a gas flow (exhaust gas) 24 ( Figure 4 ) can be discharged from the degassing opening. The degassing device 22 has a defined degassing direction, which in the illustrated embodiment is oriented perpendicularly to the base plate, ie in the Z direction. The degassing device 22 is therefore oriented toward the intermediate wall 18 .

[0052] The intermediate wall 18, which serves as a base plate, divides the housing interior of the battery housing 20 into two chambers or partial interiors, which are also referred to below as a high-pressure region 26 and a gas region 28. The battery cells 8 are arranged in the high-pressure region 22. The gas region (degassing region, degassing region, exhaust region) 24 is provided and designed to conduct a gas flow 24 away from the battery system housing 20. The intermediate wall 18 can be designed as a cooling plate with integrated coolant lines / channels, so that the temperature of the battery cells 8 can be controlled.

[0053] The intermediate wall 18 has a (through) opening 30, through which the gas flow 24 can flow from the degassing device 22 into the gas region 28. The opening 30 is surrounded by a groove-shaped, conical modified molding 32 of the intermediate wall 18, which intervenes in the gas region 28. The modified molding 32 has a stepped shoulder facing the high-pressure region 26, which forms a receiving area 34 for the battery cell 8 recessed in the intermediate wall 18. A conical or funnel-shaped inclined portion 36 is connected to the receiving area 34 on the bottom side, which surrounds and limits the opening 30 on the edge side. The inclined portion 36 extends at an acute 89D2 (inclination angle) relative to the intermediate wall 18. For example, the inclination angle is about 10°. In other words, the modified molding 32 is implemented in an inclined and pointed manner and tapers toward the opening 30.

[0054] As a result, a gap region is formed between the bevel 36 and the bottom of the battery cell 8 which is approximately wedge-shaped in cross section, the height or the inner width of which tapers outwards starting from the opening.

[0055] The bevel 36 has an edge flange 38 on the free end side, which is bent or raised in the direction of the high-pressure area 26. The obliquely extending deformation profile 32 thus ends with an upright "nose" toward the edge of the opening. This results in a circumferential (receiving) groove or slot, in which the sealing element 40 surrounding the opening 30 is arranged.

[0056] exist Figure 3 In normal operation of the battery system 6 shown in , the sealing element 40, for example, which is implemented as a sealing ring, is arranged in the receiving groove of the modified molding 32, wherein the battery cell 8 or the cell stack 10 is placed in the receiving area 34 and is thus pressed in a clamping manner in the z-direction onto the sealing element 40. The sealing element 40 is thus held between the bottom of the battery cell 8 and the inclined portion 36 of the modified molding 32 under a certain mechanical preload, so that a sealing pressure directed in the z-direction is applied to the sealing element 40. The sealing element 40 is preferably elastically compressible or deformably compressible and is at least partially movably arranged along the inclined portion 36 of the modified molding 32.

[0057] During normal operation, the (internal) pressure pHV (high pressure region pressure) in the high pressure region 26 and the (internal) pressure pG (gas region pressure) in the gas region 28 correspond substantially to the ambient pressure of the battery system 6. In other words, the high pressure region pressure pHV and the gas region pressure pG are substantially the same, so that substantially no pressure differences or pressure differentials exist between the high pressure region 26 and the gas region 28 or between the radial inside and the radial outside of the sealing element 40.

[0058] Figure 4The figure shows a fault situation of a battery cell 8, in which the internal pressure of the battery cell 8 exceeds a preset value (for example due to thermal runaway), and the degassing device 22 opens, so that the gas flow 24 flows from the cell housing 12 through the opening 30 in the degassing direction and flows into the gas region 28. This leads to an increase in pressure in the gas region 28, so that the gas region pressure pG is greater than the high-pressure region pressure pHV. As a result, the pressure at the radial inside of the sealing element 40 increases, so that the sealing element 40 is pressed radially outward from the opening 30 due to the pressure increase in the gas region 28 caused by degassing. This is in the Figure 4 This is schematically indicated by horizontal arrows 42 . Therefore, the sealing element 40 is pressed or moved along the inclined portion 36 into the gradually narrowing gap between the battery cell 8 and the reformed shaped portion 32 , thereby generating an increasingly high sealing pressure to seal the high-pressure area 26 .

[0059] The cell stack 12 is advantageously clamped or held in such a way that the battery cells 8 are not lifted out of the receiving area 34 when the sealing element 40 is displaced. Thus, even in the event of a thermal runaway of one or more battery cells 8, a reliable and operationally safe spatial and fluid separation is achieved between the high-pressure area 26 and the gas area 28.

[0060] In the present exemplary embodiment, the opening 30 is substantially designed as an elongated hole extending in the X direction, which is therefore arranged in the stacking direction below the cell bottom or the degassing device 22. Figure 5 As shown in FIG. 4 , the sealing element 40 here surrounds all degassing devices 22 or degassing openings of the battery cells 8 arranged next to one another.

[0061] Figure 6 A second exemplary embodiment of a battery system 6 is shown, in which the opening 30 is covered with a (venting) cover 44 for protection against external influences.

[0062] exist Figure 7 In the embodiment of , the sealing element 40 ′ is implemented as an elastically compressible hose, through which the coolant flows. The sealing element 40 ′ is connected to the coolant circuit of the vehicle battery 4 , in particular to the coolant line of the intermediate wall 18 .

[0063] exist Figure 8 In the embodiment shown, the modified profile 32' does not have a receiving area 34. In addition, the oblique portion 36' of the modified profile 32' is shortened, so that an increased support area for the battery cell 8 is provided on the bottom of the intermediate wall 18. The oblique portion 36' has an increased inclination angle relative to the intermediate wall 18 compared to the oblique portion 36. For example, the oblique portion 36' has an acute inclination angle of less than 45°, in particular about 30°.

[0064] Fig. 9 The above described Figure 8 A development of an embodiment of the invention, wherein a cooling section 46 in the form of a coolant guide is arranged on the gas region side adjacent to the inclined section 36'. Alternatively, the cooling section 46 can be integrated into the intermediate wall 18. Here, the cooling section 46 is arranged in particular radially outside the inclined section 36' in the flat bearing region.

On the contrary, other variants of the invention can also be derived therefrom by a person skilled in the art within the scope of the disclosed claims without departing from the subject matter of the claimed invention. In particular, all individual features described in connection with the different embodiments can also be combined in other ways within the scope of the disclosed claims without departing from the subject matter of the claimed invention.
