[0019] Modern commercial aircraft typically include very accurate on-board global positioning systems. For example, a Boeing 737NG equipped with a Smithsonian management system constantly calculates the uncertainty of the aircraft's in-flight orientation. The system is constantly updated via the Global Positioning System ("GPS") to ensure continuity and maintain positional accuracy. A multimode receiver processes the data and displays the aircraft's actual navigation performance ("ANP") to the flight crew in real time. Consequently, the narrow passages through which the above-mentioned aircraft traverse have bearing uncertainties that are much smaller than those obtained using conventional terrestrial radiolocation systems. During an approach, ANP can be compared to a predefined standard known as Required Navigation Performance ("RNP") to provide greatly improved guidance and protection directly to the runway.
