Abstract

The purpose of this invention is a method to provide a specific physical rate adapted to 802.11 WMM in EDCA mode which may be integrated as well in an Access Point as in a Station. The objective of this method is to select the 802.11 phyrate (physical rate) the most adapted for each WMM AC (Access category) of traffic requirements: For each AC it guaranties an IPLR (IP packet Lost ratio) specific physical rate and adapted to nature of the transported content. For BK (Background) and BE (Best Effort) it optimizes the used CUE (Channel Usage Estimation) in order to provide maximum bandwidth, For VI (Video) and VO (Voice) AC to guaranty first the delay bound (i.e. max IP Delay transmission (IPDT) ) and when this condition is met it optimizes the used CUE.

Description

technical field

[0001] The present invention relates to communications. More specifically, the present invention relates to a method of selecting a physical layer transmission rate or phyrate in a wireless communication system. Background technique

[0002] Wireless networks are considered the preferred network for the home environment. Multimedia applications over wireless networks present new challenges for efficient utilization of network bandwidth and computing resources to meet quality of service (QoS) requirements for video and audio.

[0003] A wireless network for example consists of an access point (AP) and a number of stations (STA) such as telephones, radios, Visio phones, televisions, computers, movie players. In this communication system, signals are linked from station or access point to station or access point through channels.

[0004] Wireless Multimedia Extensions (WME), also known as WiFi Multimedia (WMM), is a WiFi Alliance interoperability certificati...

Embodiment Construction

[0038] The above characteristics and advantages and other aspects of the present invention will become more apparent by reading the following description, especially the passages relating to:

[0039] -Relationship between PER, retry rate, excessive retries, and IPLR, and related issues;

[0040] - The retry rate should be managed by the AC;

[0041] - The multirate parameter should be specific for each AC;

[0042] -Problems faced in RCA WMM design;

[0043] - Assertions about the interaction between CUE and IPDT;

[0044] - assertions about the distribution model of the number of attempts and the impact on IPLR estimation;

[0045] - Average instant measure and average instant estimate toolbox;

[0046] -Relationship between IPDT percentile and IPLR performance;

[0047] - Effect of group size variation on IPLR, IPDT percentile estimates and mean CUE measures;

[0048] - IPLR measurement, estimation and comparison;

[0049] - IPDT percentile measurement, estimation an...
